Fort Collins indie rock band, Chess At Breakfast have released their theatrical and haunting new single, “Maybe It’s Your Birthday… The Dead Are Dead!” today. The track is taken from the band’s upcoming album, Wealthcare, out everywhere May 10th. Listen to it now below!
The single and Wealthcare were recorded at Boulder’s Coupe Studios, led by audio engineer and long-time friend, Taylor Marvin. The album was then mixed and produced by drummer, Mike Davis.
Fully capturing Chess at Breakfast’s dark side, “Maybe It’s Your Birthday… The Dead Are Dead!” juxtaposes quiet moments of eerie tension with gothic undertones and inescapable walls of sound. The song envelops twisted catchy melodies and haunting lyrical concepts, including hierarchical control and the inevitabilities of life and death.
In support of the new single and upcoming album, Chess at Breakfast will be hosting an album release show at Downtown Artery in Fort Collins, CO on Friday, May 10th, as well as a tour kick off at Lion’s Lair in Denver on Thursday, May 23rd. Blending elements of progressive rock and indie psych, Chess at Breakfast imposes manic hooks and tenacious rhythms over lyrical themes of despair and disillusionment. Their electrifying live performances embody an angsty disposition, powered by high voltage and dark humor.
The band consists of vocalist/guitarist Caleb McFadden, bassist Justin Daggett, and drummer Mike Davis. The trio formed in Fort Collins in the summer of 2016 and spent the majority of their first two years touring the Colorado circuit in support of their debut EP, The Gutshalls. In the wake of their 2018 singles “Pushing Daisies (On Your Day Off)” and “Paper Crane“, Chess at Breakfast have been tirelessly preparing for the release of their debut LP, Wealthcare, out everywhere May 10th.
