Chicago-based indie pop outfit Marina City have released their latest single “Strawberry” via Norwegian indie label Brilliance. The track is available to stream on Spotify, Apple Music, and all DSPs worldwide, and premiered exclusively at Earmilk, who calls it “beautiful, funky and extremely irresistible.”
“Sometimes to move forward you have to burn it all down.” This became the motto for Ernie Ball’s Band Of The Year, Marina City. The Chicago sextet spent most of 2018 stripping themselves down to the core in order to craft the truest version of the band. The evolution led ATWOOD MAGAZINE to claim, “Marina City’s music is sexy and sensual, resplendent and vibey. They’re indie pop with an R&B twist, evoking the best of Prince, Michael Jackson, and The 1975 without sounding like anyone but themselves.”
Partnering with super producer, Dino Zisis (Lady Gaga), the band was free to explore their childhood influences of some of the world’s biggest icons, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Queen along with today’s most exciting artists, The 1975, Foster The People, and The Weeknd. Now armed with an arsenal of new singles, Marina City have grown into their own distinctive sound. The band’s slinky and seductive first single “Addicted” completed the transformation to the new era. The band sold out their hometown headliner, performed on WGN MORNING NEWS in Chicago, and amassed 110,000 Spotify streams since “Addicted”’s release. “Strawberry,” a Prince-inspired summer anthem, marks the next phase of the band’s new era.
“I often wonder what my life would be like if I did the exact opposite of my gut feeling,” vocalist Ryan Argast explains on the new single. “Sometimes it’s just ‘what if I chose the red toothbrush instead of the blue? Would I have picked the winning lotto ticket that day?’ The long answer: Strawberry is about making consequential decisions in the heat of the moment. Short answer: Strawberry is about hooking up with your best friend. Bottom line it’s a fun song about consequences but aren’t there consequences every time you have fun?”
Marina City is sexy, dark, dynamic, broke, beautiful, groovy, and it’s nothing you can quite put your finger on. The band doesn’t care what genre they are classified in. They burnt it all down and found who they truly were underneath.
