Review by Shannon Shumaker
Indie pop duo, courtship. have already made quite a name for themselves in 2018, and their debut album, Denial in Paradise only continues to solidify their place in the scene. Complete with dreamy synth, groovy bass and incredibly stunning falsetto vocals, courtship. are paving their way to the forefront of the blossoming pop scene with this release.
There isn’t simply one way to describe Denial in Paradise, as it is a very diverse release in terms of sounds and moods, but at its core, it is very timeless. Songs like “The Kind Of Woman” are a little reminiscent of the early 2000’s indie-pop scene (see Passion Pit’s 2009 release, Manners) while cuts like “Nice Guy” and “Perfect People” are sure to become some of this year’s summer anthems. The result is something that is very accessible without feeling generic or safe.
No two songs on Denial in Paradise sound similar, which is quite a feat for a band that could easily release ten different variations of the same song and call it a day. Instead, Courtship. push the boundaries of their sound with elements of different genres peppered throughout the album. The electronic influenced “Nice Guy” contrasts beautifully with “Tell Me Tell Me,” which takes a guitar hook that sounds like something out of a Vampire Weekend song and meshes it with super dreamy synth. Meanwhile, songs like “Perfect People” feel like a misfits’ anthem – it’s something you’re going to want to sing along with at the top of your lungs – and “Warm Waters” is perfect for summer drives or daydreaming about hanging on the beach.
Denial in Paradise is the perfect length, as well. Complete with eight bangers and one brief interlude track, there isn’t any filler on this release, making it fun to listen to from beginning to end. Energetic, dreamy and catchy as hell, courtship.’s debut full-length is sure to be one of the best releases of the summer. You’re not going to want to sleep on this one.
LISTEN TO: “Perfect People” or “Nice Guy”
