Self-described “singer, songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and huge fuckin dork,” corook (aka Corinne Savage) is making her mark with her debut EP, achoo! today. Consisting of seven humorous, introspective, vulnerable and frankly catchy as hell tracks, achoo! is the perfect introduction to the Nashville-based, genre defying artist. With songs touching on a wide variety of subjects (“bad friend” finds her singing to her former friends, “degree” touches on the modern college experience and “idk god” leaves her admitting that she doesn’t have all the answers, just to name a few) achoo! not only proves that corook is no one trick pony, but it also paves the way for her future.
2022 has already gotten off to an incredibly exciting start for corook, kicking off with a run of tour dates with K. Flay and even more shows coming up in support of achoo! this summer. Before she inevitably blows up (because honestly, it’s impossible not to relate to her music) get to know a little bit more about the self-described “~freckled chubby babe~” and listen to achoo! now below.
Prelude Press: The new year has already been off to an insane start for you, with the release of a few new singles, a tour with K. Flay already wrapped up and now more shows coming this summer! How has 2022 been so far? Fun? Exciting? Overwhelming?
corook: So far 2022 has been my hardest working year yet! And it’s only March! My first tour opening for K.Flay was incredible, I couldn’t have asked for a better opening slot or crew to tour with. I would describe myself as a homebody and an introvert so I’m totally exhausted now. I will be hibernating in Nashville until further notice thank uuuuu! No but honestly I’m really excited for everything to come this year 🙂
You recently released your new single, “idk god”, which is a really personal and very timely song. Can you tell us a little bit about it?
Idk god was one of the first co-writing sessions I ever did for this project. I was on zoom with Caro and the song kind of spilled out of our subconsciouses. I remember walking out of the session like cool that was fun, just another song, no big deal and then days later listening to the song again and ending up in tears like “omg where did this come from??? How did I not have an emotional breakdown while writing this???”
“idk god” is taken from your upcoming EP, achoo!. What are you most excited for listeners to hear on the EP? What are you most proud of?
These songs are filled with character voices, glitching transitions, and emotional confessions hidden behind my humor. I think inevitably you can hear how much fun I had making these songs and I’m most excited to share that. I produced most of these songs by myself, and that’s a really exciting accomplishment for me.
It being your debut EP, was there anything you knew you wanted to address or accomplish with it?
I think one thing I wanted to do was show a lot of different sides of myself. I didn’t want people to think I was a “sad song” artist or a “party song” artist or a “love song” artist. So I tried to add a lot of different angles of my perspective on the EP.
Were there any challenges that you faced while working on the EP? Anything that you learned about yourself?
I would say TikTok has been my biggest challenge. It’s the biggest marketing tool for new artists and it’s a hard platform to find your voice on. Once I went back to the basics of what I find creatively fulfilling I found my way but that shit is hard.
What was it like to begin working on and launching this project in the midst of a pandemic?
It didn’t feel any different than any other time to be honest. I was a babysitter for most of 2020 and 2021. So it was business as usual for me. Go babysit on the weekdays and make music on the weekends.
You have this awesome ability to tackle really serious and personal themes in your music with a humorous and fun lens – was this a goal you had when you first started working on this project, or something that sort of just happened?
Thank you 🙂 Humor is the way I deal with life so it’s a really natural progression that it found it’s way into my music. When you go to school for songwriting you learn lots of tips and tricks for chord progressions, melodic ideas, and lyrical structure. But no one teaches you how to be yourself through music. I think corook is proof of me finding myself.
You’ll be hitting the road again with JP Saxe this summer! If someone is catching you live for the first time, what can they expect from a live show? What would you like them to take away from it?
Soooo my show is kind of…..weird. I would describe it as equal parts music and comedy. I’ve created this show as a way to introduce myself to all the new people that don’t know me. Yanno, since I’m kind of new to this whole thing. You might cry, you’ll probably laugh, you’ll either love me or hate me. I welcome all of it 🙂
Thank you for taking the time to chat! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
If there’s anything I want you to leave this interview with it’s that I do not fuck with snakes. Thank you and goodnight.
