With their new EP due out on November 18th, we decided to chat with Brooklyn three-piece, DREAMERS about the record, the meaning behind their name, and the message behind their music. You can check out their track “My Little Match” below and be sure to pick up their EP when it drops on November 18th!
For anyone who hasn’t had the chance to check you out yet, can you tell us a little bit about yourselves? How would you describe your music?
We are a three piece rock band from Brooklyn. Nick and Chris are from Seattle and Nelson is from Maryland. Our music is a kaleidoscopic mix of our strange dreams and influences, cosmic grunge pop.
So you guys used to be known as Motive – what was the reason behind the sound and name change?
Motive split in half and Nick and Chris had all these new songs, it really happened organically. It was a logical progression from Motive, but really felt like it was its own thing with the addition of Nelson. We went into a chrysalis and came out all butterfly and shit.
What does the band name mean to you?
Something about sleep and dreams, realities and perception. Our whole thing about the name is that it’s not just us who are ‘DREAMERS’, it’s everyone who listens to our music, everyone in the audience, everyone who joins us. We all get transported to a different plane every night when we sleep, and get to experience our thoughts mixing and melding into that abstract narrative. It’s weird stuff man.
You also have a new EP dropping in November – can you tell us a little bit about the release?
The EP will be the first tangible collection of all these songs we’ve been making over the last year — naturally we’re very excited to finally share them.
Were there any goals that you guys set for yourselves while working on the EP? Anything you really wanted to accomplish?
To dive into the abyss and return with crystal nuggets of truth, which reveal all the secrets of the universe. To achieve an inner peace so profound that it ripples through the world and causes everyone to drop their guns and start working together to build heaven on earth. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re hoping by November we will. We also have a goal of getting an endorsement to release our line of ‘Dream Shoes’ (photo below).
Is there anything – any message or feeling – you’d like listeners to be able to take away from the EP?
There’s a special feeling we’ve gotten from listening to great music from the ages, that makes you forget about the small things, and remember what really matters in life. It makes your imagination come alive. We hope we can create at least a bit of that for someone.
Did you have any major influences, musical or not, when working on the record?
Non-musical influences are really important to us, David Lynch and Hieronymus Bosch are a couple (see our new video for ‘Wolves’ to see what we mean). Our amazing producer Danny Kalb was a massive influence. We took a walk through Crabtree Falls in Virginia while recording, this was an influence as well.
Do you have a favorite song off of the album?
Right now it’s ‘My Little Match’, which is a paranoid nightmare about lighting a match during a gas-leak. But honestly, each song on the album was our favorite while working on it.
With the new EP dropping soon, do you have any big plans in the works?
We have a ton of videos in the works, and will be releasing one for each song. We are planning some tours in the US and Canada as well.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
There is no word to describe the vastness of the universe. It is a giant huge massive swirling clockwork of cause and effect. The amount of space and time required for this to result in human life is so big that it’s hard to understand, nearly incomprehensible. And yet here we are. A result of nature able to understand itself and look back into the cosmos, if only for a short while. So don’t stress too much about the small things, they’re all really very small.
