Review by Shannon Shumaker
Thieves Two Covers EP is literally what the title suggests – two cover songs from the Austin-based pop-punk band. Kicking off the EP is their high energy cover of The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Now I’ll be honest, I almost always cringe when any band tries to cover The Beatles. Not only can it be very overdone, but it’s very hard to do some of their songs justice, and when this track first starts, I don’t necessarily have high hopes. The fast-paced guitar and drums aren’t too promising, but as soon as the vocals come in, they’re sure to pique your interest, making you stick around to see just how the song goes, and trust me, it’s well worth it. Taking this song and giving it a gritty, high energy pop-punk twist, Thieves will absolutely win you over with their modern take of “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Honestly, I don’t know how I didn’t see it coming, as pop-punk and songs about friendship pretty much go hand in hand. Needless to say, the band hits it out of the park with this cover.
Following “With A Little Help From My Friends” is the band’s cover of Weezer’s “Buddy Holly.” Upping the tempo and changing the key, Thieves give this classic song their own twist. Similar to “With A Little Help From My Friends,” it’s hard to judge the song from just the first few notes, but as soon as the chorus comes in, it’s easy to enjoy. However, the faster pace doesn’t necessarily seem to fit “Buddy Holly,” as it ends up coming across as slightly rushed and messy. That’s not to say that the cover isn’t a success, though. Thieves absolutely take the song and put their own unique twist on it, and that’s what covers are all about. It’s a fun homage to Weezer, just as the first track is to The Beatles. If nothing else, these two tracks will inspire new listeners to go give Thieves a chance if they haven’t already, and will be a fun listen for their fans.
