Review by Nina Schirmer
Hailing from the UK, Trash Boat’s debut album, Nothing I Write You Can Change What You’ve Been Through is one of the greatest pop-punk album releases of the summer. The energy and passion captured throughout the lively album adds to the list of why this album is a must listen.
The album opens up with the track “Strangers,” that starts with a slow, emotionally gripping guitar that quickly switches to a faster pace with passionate and strong vocal work. At first it’s a really great song that you wouldn’t think could get unexpectedly even better until Dan Campbell [The Wonder Years] jumps in and sings the bridge. The album picks ups even more with the exciting and fun track, “How Selfish I Seem.” With the catchy heavier guitar riffs, quick drumming patterns, and the heartfelt lyrics of the chorus, it’s hard not to be glued to this track.
The third track on the album “Tring Quarry” has a really chill vibe to it and is a little slower than the opening songs, which transitions perfectly into the next track, “Brave Face.” This track is really hard-hitting and it also quotes the title of the album through passionately sung lyrics, “I know that nothing I write you can change what you’ve been through/I hope you found some room to grow.”
The album then transitions back to a quick pace with “Eleven.” The following track “Pangaea” is a shorter song with a heightened intensity in the vocals and instrumentation. The next song, “Second Wind” has its own unique sound compared to other tracks on the album that generally sticks to a more traditional pop-punk sound. The eighth song, “Catharsis” really stands out with the instrumental build-ups and the emotion you feel when you hear the strong and inspiring vocals.
“Things We Left Behind” is a song you wouldn’t really expect. It is short yet a slow, peaceful track with really soothing vocals. The album then flows right into the second to last song, “The Guise of a Mother.” This track is very anthemic and could easily be a future crowd favorite.
The album finishes off with the track, “You Know, You Know, You Know,” ending the album on a positive note through its lyrics and energetic instrumentation. Nothing I Write You Can Change What You’ve Been Through is an awesome album that gives listeners a glimpse into how far Trash Boat are bound to go.
