Review by Shannon Shumaker
Shatterproof have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with on their self-titled EP. Though it is only five songs in length, the EP provides listeners with a well established yet incredibly diverse sound from the Colorado band. Spearheaded by emotive, passionate vocals and theatrical instrumentals, these tracks will leave you eagerly awaiting more by the time they come to an end.
“So Punk” opens the album, and right out of the gate, Shatterproof prove their diversity with this high energy, dynamic track. The band successfully merges many different sounds and genres to create something incredibly unique with “So Punk.” The track is spearheaded by hard hitting guitar and Branson Hoog’s aggressive vocals and accented by nearly chaotic violin that gives it just the edge that’ll set the band apart from the pack.
The energy established in “So Punk” is lost slightly in the long intro that comes along with the following track, “Cookie Cutter Life,” but if you stick around, you’re in for a real treat. This second song really shines vocally, kicking off with gorgeous harmonies before things really kick in. Hoog’s voice trembles with emotion before soaring over theatrical instrumentals, the mood of the song changing and flowing simply with the tone of his voice.
From the epic “Cookie Cutter Life,” things move onto the high energy and revenge-fueled “Karma,” before breaking into the stripped down and emotional “Definition Of Fine.” Within three songs, you’ll be able to hear three completely different sides of Shatterproof. Although it can feel a bit choppy from track to track, the band definitely shines with each coming song. They harness the rage and fire on “Karma” before opening up a bit on the vulnerable, “Definition Of Fine,” which takes on a more ambient, electronic vibe. The EP then comes to an end with the epic “Lykos,” which almost feels like the conclusion of a massive full-length.
By the time the EP is through, you’re sure to feel exhausted yet fulfilled. Shatterproof will certainly hook first-time listeners and excite long term fans with this release. When given the chance to really run with a full-length, they’ll definitely be able to expand on these themes and sounds for something cohesive and exciting.
