Review by Dom Vigil
Two years in the marking, Mr. Copacetic is the perfect embodiment of Denver’s most energetic rock band, CITRA. This collection of five songs, while brief, is loud, dynamic, catchy and incredibly well written. It’s a lot of things, but it’s certainly not boring. From start to finish, Mr. Copacetic not only takes you on a wild ride, but it further establishes CITRA’s unique sound, which falls somewhere in between gritty modern rock and the likes of Motörhead.
Surprisingly, the band has found a way to ease you into the burst of energy that is Mr. Copacetic, too. “Static Erratic” starts off relatively tame, but that doesn’t last long, as it quickly explodes into aggressive, half-screamed vocals, driving drums and rapid guitar and bass work. These same elements continue to propel the EP forward as well, but it thankfully never feels stagnant. Instead, each track comes at you fast and catches you off guard.
Despite the fact that CITRA only have five songs to win you over, Mr. Copacetic is a very well-rounded release. The second track, “Felt So Right,” is driven by bass and drums to start, but is quickly filled out with some of the EP’s best guitar work and Brandon Arndt’s energetic vocals. The shining moment on the EP, though, is definitely the middle track, “That’s What She Said.” This song offers a brief break sonically, as it’s bookended between four other energetic songs, but it’s also bound to get stuck in your head. Then, just before it lulls you into relaxation, the darker “Grant My Wish” brings the energy right back up to eleven. The grand finale is “R.Y.F.F.,” a massive crescendo that not only serves as the perfect closer, but also hosts some spectacular bass work and Arndt’s best vocal performance on the EP.
With Mr. Copacetic, CITRA have further cemented their place in the Denver music scene and successfully expanded on the unique sound that they introduced to listeners back in 2016. These songs are not only fun to listen to, but they somehow manage to feel both timeless and fresh at the same time. Mark my words, CITRA are poised to become Denver’s next breakout band.
