Violet Night have used stunning soundscapes to transcend genre and create their diverse and accessible debut album, Colours Of You. With a sound that rides the line between artists like The Honorary Title, Dashboard Confessional and even Angels & Airwaves at times, Violet Night quickly prove that they’re capable of almost anything while still staying true to themselves on this release.
Colours Of You is simply soothing, and this is thanks to Connor Pohl’s smooth vocals coupled with emotive instrumentals. Violet Night don’t just create fun to listen to songs on this release, but instead weave a story and transport you to their own vibrant, beautiful world, and the stunning opening track, “Depths” is the perfect introduction for the songs that follow. Quickly proving their diversity is the album’s energetic and uplifting second song, “Young Guns.” Theatrical and exciting, “Young Guns” will make you eager to hear the rest of the album, and trust me, you’re in for a real treat.
Standout songs on Colours Of You are definitely the ones that break the mold like the acoustic anthem, “Sparks” or the massive, cinematic “Choir Of Your Mind.” Although the constantly changing sounds and moods can cause the album to feel a bit choppy in the transitions, it also keeps things from feeling stagnant or boring. You never know what Violet Night are going to do with the next song, and it makes for a very exciting and fulfilling listen.
You also might find yourself longing for a big, explosive moment as Colours Of You plays through, and you’ll certainly find it in the seventh track, “Secrets.” Despite their relatively mellow and soothing sound, Violet Night prove that they’re able to step out of their comfort zone on this track and the ones that follow.
Colours Of You’s biggest strength is definitely in its diversity. Throughout these ten songs, Violet Night manage to ride the line between a nostalgic early 2000’s emo sound and stunning modern indie-rock. The result is something that feels a bit nostalgic without sounding like it’s trying to be anything else. Instead, Violet Night have crafted a sound all their own, making for an incredibly easy to listen to and uplifting release.
