Review by Dom Vigil
Short, sweet and to the point, Denver’s SYCDVK transport you to another universe with their new EP, Lurking Earthlings. Like their debut EP, Aubrey, Lurking Earthlings is a concept release, and SYCDVK waste no time weaving a vibrant and unique story on this release. Throughout these five songs, the band explores humanity through the eyes of alien visitors, making for a wild listen from start to finish.
Opening track, “Oasis In Space” quickly sets the scene for Lurking Earthlings not only lyrically, but also instrumentally. It’s groovy, dreamy and otherworldly without losing any of the complex, jazz inspired sound that was well established on their debut EP.
Within only five songs SYCDVK manage to experiment with ever-changing sounds, too. Where “Oasis In Space” is a massive opener, “Pie” is a bit more laid back. (Although that’s not to say that nothing interesting happens in this song – just wait till the insane second half.) The band really explodes on “What Do You See?,” which is carried by spectacular bass work and really feels like the EP’s climax.
Larger than life, entertaining and timeless, Lurking Earthlings is well worth listening to more than once to take in every single layer. From the creative lyricism to the spectacular songwriting, the band really takes advantage of everything they have to offer and then some. With Lurking Earthlings, SYCDVK prove themselves once more, leaving listeners longing for only one thing – a future full-length.
