Review by Shannon Shumaker
Delicate and hard hitting, complex yet incredibly soothing, Covet’s newest release, effloresce finds the San Francisco trio at their best. Although it is only six songs in length, effloresce not only feels incredibly full, but it also shows a lot a growth following the band’s 2015 release, Currents.
effloresce flows with ease and manages to tell a story without saying a single word, from the atmospheric and airy “Shibuya” and the eerie and tense “Glimmer” to the massive “Falkor.” There are multiple peaks and valleys throughout the release, making for a fun listen that’ll keep you on your toes. “Shibuya” featuring San Holo kicks off effloresce with a light and easy going vibe, which contrasts brilliantly with “Glimmer.” The stunning third song, “Sea Dragon” featuring Mario Camarena is a perfect example of the playful and well thought out songwriting on this release. Bass and drums take over at times, but the guitar work certainly shines on this song, which starts off fairly soft and delicate before exploding near the end.
effloresce’s highest peak comes on the seven minute long “Falkor,” which will leave you feeling exhausted by the time it comes to an end. Everything seems to come to a head on this song before leveling out and ending things on a brilliant note with “Howl.”
It’s very easy to get lost in the sweeping, stunning songs that make up effloresce, which means you may have to listen to the album a few times to fully take it in, but the great thing is, you’re bound to find something new to love with each listen. Above all, these songs sound polished and refined – well thought out and carefully crafted, but without playing it safe. There is still an unpredictable edge to Covet’s sound that’ll keep you on your toes, but they’ve definitely matured with this release.
