Review by Shannon Shumaker
Since 2015, Kevin Devine has been teaming up with his friends and fellow musicians for Devinyl Splits, and three years later, he’s still pushing boundaries with the eighth entry in the series. This time, Devine finds himself covering songs from Now, Now’s 2012 release, Threads alongside David Bazan of Pedro The Lion.
While Bazan and Devine’s two songs on this EP couldn’t sound more different, they sit perfectly side by side. First up is David Bazan’s soulful and emotional cover of “Thread.” Kicking off with deep, soulful vocals before the song explodes into powerful falsettos, Bazan’s take on Cacie Dalager’s delicate vocal work give the track new life. The energy certainly isn’t lost on Bazan’s cover either – instead, it builds and builds until exploding at the very end.
Where “Thread” feels more raw and explosive, Kevin Devine’s track captures the moody and ambient sound that Now, Now have really become known for. His reverb heavy cover of “Prehistoric” offers an absolutely stunning take on the band’s sound and really does the original song justice. And although “Thread” and “Prehistoric” are on complete opposite ends of the sonic spectrum, it’s certainly refreshing to hear two entirely different takes on Now, Now’s unique sound.
