Review by Shannon Shumaker
It’s impossible to classify or describe Spooky Cool’s new EP, Every Thing Ever with just a few simple words, and that’s what makes it a must-listen. By blending elements of fuzzy post-punk with metal and math rock, Spooky Cool create a complex listen that feels longer than only five songs and will leave you fulfilled by the time it comes to a close.
The epic opener, “Strange Rooms” showcases the band’s dynamic sound perfectly, growing and growing until the massive close while consistently featuring stunning vocal harmonies. It feels like a story that quickly leads into the eerie “Black Wine.” Like “Strange Rooms,” the second song transforms into another monster entirely as it chugs forward with dissonant chords, loud drums and beautiful vocal work.
After “Black Wine” the EP does feel a little meandering for a moment. The beginning of “Heaven’s Sway” loses a little bit of the energy that the second song establishes, but thankfully, it’s quick to pick up the pace with a rather intense and busy sound, driven forward by pounding drums and dual vocals. Although it might come off as choppy at times, the ever-changing moments on Every Thing Ever do a spectacular job of showcasing Spooky Cool’s dynamic sound, as well. “Old Hair Mine,” for instance, is the warmest and most inviting track of the bunch, while the closer finds the band taking a step away from every other sound found on the EP, opening with acoustic guitar before exploding into a solid, upbeat sound perfect for summer.
At any point on the Every Thing Ever, you can really feel the energy and emotion that went into crafting these songs, making you feel like you’re in the same room with the band. The best thing about the EP is the fact that it doesn’t play by the rules – when you think they’re going to go left, Spooky Cool goes right. Just when you think you know what to expect, they catch you off guard yet again. These songs are weird, reckless and unpredictable, and most importantly, they feel incredibly human.
