Dreamy, warm and inviting, Took A While, the latest EP from LA duo, Neil Frances arrives just in time for the tail end of summer. Although it is only six songs in length, Neil Frances manage to transport you to a different world and a more relaxed mindset with this release.
Kicking off with the dreamy, upbeat intro, “Coming Back Around,” it’s obvious right away that Neil Frances have created something truly special with Took A While. While normally, it might be difficult to fully understand an artist based off of a short EP, Neil Frances hook you right away with “Coming Back Around,” which is perfect for summer night drives. This song feels like freedom, urging you to keep listening to hear what happens next. And what does happen next is definitely worth sticking around for. While songs like “Ask Me Anything” and “Coming Back Around” are warm and inviting, others like the groovy “Took a While” and “Day Dreamer” are driven by catchy bass, atmospheric vocals and retro synth. “Day Dreamer” is definitely a standout, riding a stunning line between artists like Vacationer and Empire of the Sun.
From start to finish, Neil Frances manage to keep you hooked and longing for more with Took A While. The perfect closer, “Dumb Love” offers a spectacular finale, but also serves as a great ellipsis. There’s definitely more to come from this duo, and if this soothing, atmospheric release is any indication, they’re destined for greatness.
