Review by Shannon Shumaker
Creating an impactful release with only three songs can be a challenge for most bands, especially when introducing their sound to new listeners, but Denver indie/ambient band Tolstoy certainly rise to the occasion on their new EP, Loss. Comprised of three cinematic and soothing songs, Loss not only immerses you in Tolstoy’s world, but it also makes you feel something. Smooth, soaring vocals coupled with warm instrumentals leave no questioning what Tolstoy is all about by the time this EP comes to an end.
“Eurydice” serves as the perfect intro to this EP, with inviting, passionate vocals sitting perfectly alongside calming guitar. This song (and the other two that follow) couldn’t arrive at a more perfect time of the year, serving as the perfect soundtrack as summer fades into fall. The way that “Eurydice” builds and eventually explodes is absolutely stunning as well, feeling like a massive finale despite the fact that it’s only the first song.
As a whole, Loss feels incredibly polished, from the well controlled yet passionate vocals to the smooth guitar work and even driving drums. Like the first song, the massive final track, “Empty Things” is very powerful, making the EP feel well-rounded and full. With only three songs Tolstoy manage to create a impressive and even iconic release, cementing their stunning sound and showing quite a bit of promise for the future.
