Review by Shannon Shumaker
With their debut EP, Summer Is A Curse, The Faim are quickly establishing themselves as 2018’s next breakout rock band. Exploding with their massive and anthemic hit single, “Summer Is A Curse” before taking listeners through an insanely dynamic journey within only six songs, The Faim don’t hold back on their debut release, and it sure as hell pays off.
Summer Is A Curse might be short, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in content. Despite only being six songs long, the EP feels full, and that’s thanks to the fact that no two songs sound the same. With each track, the band showcases a different side to their sound, from the catchy lead single to the reggae-inspired “A Million Stars” and the vulnerable “Make Believe,” which finds vocalist Josh Raven proclaiming, “I wanna feel something.”
Aside from the obvious hits, the album’s standout is definitely the electric fifth track, “My Heart Needs to Breathe,” a massive, hip-hop influenced cut that’ll catch you off guard with insane vocal runs and mind-blowing tempo changes. Naturally, the band throws you another curveball immediately after with the toned down closer, “When It Comes” that’ll leave you wanting more.
With Summer Is A Curse, The Faim definitely don’t waste any time proving their diversity and songwriting capabilities. Vocally, Raven is able to flow between different genres with ease and sonically, the band never once misses a beat, even on their most diverse tracks. None of these songs feel safe, showcasing an insane range and a ton of promise for the band’s future.
