Jeff Whalen’s latest album, 10 More Rock Super Hits feels like summer, even in the middle of February. Complete with warm, retro instrumentals, catchy as hell choruses and memorable vocal hooks, 10 More Rock Super Hits is a timeless bop that’ll have to bobbing your head and singing along in no time.
Opening track, “Goofing Around” does a spectacular job setting the tone for the rest of the album, complete with warm tones and a memorable chorus. Easily one of the strongest songs of the first half of the album, though, is the catchy as hell “Jendy!”. A total earworm, the chorus of “Jendy!” is sure to get stuck in your head while instrumentally, this song feels totally timeless. It’s a perfect pop-rock hit.
Only three songs in, and 10 More Rock Super Hits is bound to transport your somewhere else entirely. These songs, especially “Ground Game for Worm” and “Kung Fu Criminal” will make long for the beach or long drives with the windows down. And the best part is, the album isn’t one dimensional, either. While the first three songs on 10 More Rocks Super Hits tend to stick to a similar sound, songs like the sweet, poppy love song, “Man Of Devotion” and the piano and bass-driven “Shanghai Surprise” shake things up a bit. Then there’s the massive “The Alien Lanes,” which is easily one of the strongest and most dynamic songs on the album, and couldn’t feel more different than bops like “Jendy!” or “Goofing Around.”
The best thing about 10 More Rock Super Hits is the fact that it demands to be heard. Too common are songs or albums that tend to fade into the background or offer predictable songwriting and sounds, but that can’t be said about 10 More Rock Super Hits. Although there is a definite theme and overarching sound on the album, each and every song feels incredibly unique and offers something new and exciting. These songs are sure to put you in a good mood, and that alone makes the album worth a listen.
