Review by Shannon Shumaker
With seven distinct personalities, Boston-based genre bending band Juice have managed to make even a short five song EP feel incredibly diverse. Their latest effort, you are simply magnificent is a stunning exploration of the band’s more vulnerable side while showcasing their wide range of influences and musical abilities.
The EP’s opening track, “Straitjacket” is a romantic R&B influenced cut that’ll make you want to curl up in bed with a special someone. Spearheaded by simplistic, romantic-sounding guitar work and warm, sensual vocals, this song sets the tone for the tracks to follow while transitioning into different sounds and influences with ease, especially in the hip-hop influenced bridge. From there, the EP flows with ease into the indie-pop track, “Peace of Mind,” which is driven by soft, smooth vocals, a strong bass line, gorgeous guitar work and even a string section. If it were any other band, the transition would seem out of left field, but Juice makes it feel natural and easy.
Closing out the EP is the catchy as hell, funk-based “Audrey Tell Me” and the stunning ballad, “Stupidfreak”. Again, these two songs couldn’t sound more different, but the band has a way of making them flow easily together without a choppy transition. If Juice is capable of such clean, flawless songwriting on a short EP, I can’t wait to hear what they do with an eventual full-length.
