Canadian alt-pop artist Vi is reborn on her debut full-length album, Afterlife. The empowering and emotional new album finds Vi letting go of her past, leaving toxic relationships behind, and coming out the other end a stronger person. Driven primarily by intricate beats and Vi’s soulful vocals, the album finds her at her most vulnerable and most real.
Opening the album is “Living” which serves as the perfect “fuck you” to someone who is holding you back. The song, which is driven home by the line, “Bitch I’m living and you don’t fit in” perfectly sets the tone for the songs to come. And they’re not all one dimensional by any means. Although the overarching theme of the album is one of strength and resilience, songs like “Victim” and “Sleep Through” show quite a bit of vulnerability, as well, proving that you don’t have to always be strong in order to have strength. Hauntingly beautiful and incredibly relatable, Afterlife will easily connect with listeners, no matter which part of their own rebirth journey they’re in, and Vi is there to walk you through all the ups and downs with her soulful, powerful voice.
