Just one year after the release of Looking For A Light, LA genre-benders, Tombstones In Their Eyes are taking things to the next level with their new EP, A Higher Place. Bringing a more melodic sound to their already signature trippy, fuzzy style, A Higher Place finds blends shoegaze, psych-rock and a little bit of indie-rock in a way that feels incredibly natural.
Opening the EP is “I Know Why”, which effortlessly builds the excitement and energy for the songs that follow. With a very full feeling sound, “I Know Why” promises to hit hard live, and is followed perfectly by the EP’s bright yet haunting title track, “A Higher Place”. The remaining songs follow suit, easily balancing light and dark, whether it’s in the lyrically powerful “I’m Not Living In Fear” or the aptly titled “Dreaming,” which takes on a dreamy quality. The meditative five minute long final song, “River” wraps things up neatly, leaving the release feeling very well rounded.
While some of the vocals can tend to get lost in the mix throughout the EP, it actually comes off as quite refreshing. Rather than the vocals outshining the other instruments on A Higher Place, they sit perfectly alongside the fuzzy, intricate guitar work. Every instrument is on a level playing field, each with their own time to shine throughout the EP, making for a very solid, timeless release.
