“I love my sister but sometimes she’s an asshole,” Nothing More’s vocalist Jonny Hawkins said about half way through last night’s sold out show at the Ogden Theatre in Denver. It was an unexpected, candid statement about mental health. The type of statement you would expect to hear in a personal conversation not on stage in front of 1600 people.
Those candid, heart-on-your-sleeve statements and lyrics are clearly what have drawn fans to the Texas quartet since their break through self titled record in 2014.
Tuesday night’s concert was a showcase of a band that is still on the rise. Hawkins and company ripped thru a 17 song, 90 minute set with abandon. The band kicked off the set with “Let’em Burn” and the energy stayed high as they tore thru the next 16 songs.
It’s always fun to watch a band that still clearly loves to perform and brings a high level of energy to a performance and isn’t falling back on stage production to cover up for their lack of interest in playing. Hawkins noted between songs that they will start the process of writing and recording their next album as soon as this tour wraps up. As someone who came into the show as a casual listener of the band, I can’t wait to hear what they do next and will really be looking forward to seeing them play again.
