City and Colour kicked off his highly anticipated US tour in Denver on August 29th, much to the excitement of the sold-out crowd at Summit Music Hall. Marking his first US tour dates since the release of his latest record, The Love Still Held Me Near, it came as no surprise to hear plenty of brand new songs peppered throughout the set, including the night’s opening song, “Meant To Be”, but throughout the night, fans were treated to a career-spanning set that celebrated both old and new music in a way that felt completely fitting for a 2023 City and Colour set.
High points of the night certainly came during some of the newer cuts, as it was clear that Dallas Green and the rest of his band were excited to finally debut them live, however it would be a crime not to mention some of the deep cuts of the night. Since the release of his debut solo album, Sometimes, in 2005, Dallas Green’s sound has gone through many transformations, yet never veering too far from the heartfelt, emotional songwriting that fans first fell in love with. On The Love Still Held Me Near and other recent releases, he certainly leans more into the full band sound that you’ll hear live, and experiencing the more fleshed-out renditions of songs like “Hello, I’m Delaware” and the epic closer, “Sleeping Sickness” was a dream come true for any long-time listener. Meanwhile, Alexisonfire fans got their fill on a mashup of “Comin’ Home” and “This Could Be Anywhere In The World” later on in the set.
With a stunning, yet not overwhelming, production and a full sound that made for more joyous singalongs of even the more somber tracks, it was clear that this was Dallas Green at his best. Nearly two decades since the inception of City and Colour, they simply just keep getting better and better, and those who are lucky enough to catch a show on this upcoming run are in for a real treat.
