Dirty Heads Sound Of Change

Review by Seth Wood Music can be used for many different things. Some people just want to sit in a dark room and surrender their emotions to the music, letting the sounds showcase their astounding power to manipulate a person’s feelings. Those same people might also need something to energize them so that they can get through the final hour of work, or the last five minutes of a long run. There are also things like elevator music and background music, which are meant to be heard but not necessarily listened to. The new Dirty Heads album, Sound of Change,…

Hybrid Sheep Free From The Clutches Of Gods

Review by Seth Wood Hybrid Sheep, a five piece band from France, are about as metalcore as it gets. They remind me so much of that great era in metal history where bands like As I Lay Dying and Parkway Drive became extremely popular and were playing to sold out venues across the U.S. Like any term used to describe a musical genre, “metalcore” has become a bit of a confusing label. I generally use the term as a way to separate this sort of metal from “death metal,” which is much faster and more technical, “black metal,” “progressive metal,”…

Circa Survive Descensus

Review by Seth Wood Circa Survive is an incredible band. Anyone who has spent some hours listening to their music will agree. Their sound is and has always been their own, with their super groovy, in-the-pocket drum and bass work, their ever-changing, ambient guitar tones, and of course, their superb vocalist Anthony Green. The band put out three unforgettable LPs before putting out Violent Waves in 2012. Violent Waves was, by no stretch of the imagination, a bad album. I even gave it a very favorable review while I was working for a different publication; however, it lacks that lingering…

Hombre Malo Persistent Murmur of Words of Wrath

Review by Seth Wood It is a shame that the term “atmospheric metal” is reserved for bands who create these so called atmospheres using complex synthesizer sounds. I would much rather use the term for bands like Hombre Malo, whose noisy, grungy sound shakes the listener into visions of a cold, black night, muddy fields suffocating what little grass there is about, blinding lightning splitting open the sky and revealing the hundreds of decrepit shadows lurking about. This is much more on par with what I would call atmospheric. I had many choices of upcoming albums I could cover, but…

Review: Veil Of MayaFeaturing: Veil Of Maya, Flagship, Bodies We’ve Buried & The Panoramic The Marquis Theatre, Denver, CO. 10/24/14Review by: Seth WoodOn October 24, 2014, at approximately 10:45pm, I witnessed what I thought had to be some sort of defect in my eyes—an entire dance floor of rowdy young adults all jumping together in prefect unison to the unrelenting beat of Veil of Maya’s “Namaste.” I kid you not; everything in my field of vision seemed synced in that moment, to the point that it felt like my eyes were twitching. This was one of those concerts that have an aura about…

For All I Am No Home

Review by Seth Wood Back in November 2011, I first discovered For All I Am, a four-piece metal band from Chicago, who at the time was touring with Our Last Night. Around the time their first album was released, I heard the news that my band would be opening for them and Our Last Night. Having never heard of For All I Am before (which was the case for most people because at that point, the band had not released much of anything), I decided to use the great powers of Spotify to check out their EP, Lone Wolf, one…
