Los Angeles by way of Houston indie-pop artist Nick Vyner kicked off his soon to be busy 2022 in March with the release of “Foundation”, a glistening pop track that finds him starting a new chapter in his musical career. Inspired by the the sometimes frustrating political landscape of the music industry, “Foundation” is a lyrically honest track that finds Vyner becoming even more comfortable in his sound than ever before. Now, he is following up “Foundation” with his newest single, “Flood”.
While it is a new song to his fans, “Flood” is a track that Vyner has been working on and playing for years. A favorite of his friends and family, the song was produced by Casey Malanuk, a close friend that truly made the song come to life. With both “Flood” and “Foundation” out now, more shows coming up and plans to release more new music all year long, this certainly won’t be the last time you hear from Nick Vyner this year. Get to know a little bit more about him and listen to “Flood” now below.
Prelude Press: You kicked off what is promising to be a very exciting 2022 with the release of your newest single, “Foundation” in March! What are you looking forward to the most this year?
Nick Vyner: Obviously I’m looking forward to putting new music out, but I’m most excited for the live shows coming up this year. Getting on stage and playing these songs after spending years listening to them in my bedroom makes them feel fresh again.
Can you tell us a little bit about “Foundation”? What inspired it?
I was just feeling burnt out by a lot of the conversations I was having surrounding the state of the music industry and had some thoughts I wanted to get off my chest. Indie artists spend a lot of time trying to prove their worth to all sorts of people and sometimes, it feels worth it, but other times you feel really taken advantage of. I was ready to put those feelings into a song so I could stop complaining about them. Jack Laboz and Luka Kloser totally understood the sound I was going for and really helped the song come to life.
“Foundation” is your first new song since 2020’s “Mood Swing” – how do you feel that you’ve grown as an artist since your last release?
I feel like I know myself way better now. I know what I’m trying to say with my music, I know how I want it to sound, and I know how I want to present it to the public. I used to love to try and categorize my songs as I worked on them and I’ve let that go as well. My entire process just feels much more free and honest.
You worked on “Foundation” alongside Luka Kloser and Jack Laboz – what impact did they have on the song?
There is no “Foundation” without the two of them. We wrote and produced the song at the same time so we were all bouncing ideas off of each other and having fun with it. They’re so easy to work with and totally unafraid to try things out and see what sticks. Having collaborators like them just makes the entire process way more fun.
You’re also releasing your new single, “Flood”! Can you tell us about the song? What are you excited for listeners to hear on it?
I love this song. It’s been a favorite of my friends and family for years now and they’ve heard many different iterations since its initial inception. Casey Malanuk, who produced and wrote the song with me, has been one of my closest friends since before I moved to Los Angeles and I’ve always found a real comfort working with him. His brain is full of amazing and inventive ideas and Flood is a perfect example of our collaborative efforts. I can’t wait to hear what people think.
Do you have any other big goals for the music you’re working on this year? Is there anything you’d like to try or experiment with in the future?
I just hope I can keep people on their toes from release to release. I don’t think anyone will know what sound to expect with each new song and that really excites me. I like to be a jack of all trades when it comes to genre so you’ll hear the results of some fun experimentation over the past few years.
When can fans expect to hear some more new music?
I don’t have an answer for you but I promise not to keep you waiting too long.
Do you have any other big plans coming up? Any shows?
I’ll be announcing more shows as we roll into summer, and in the meantime, you can expect new music from me all year long. It’s gonna be a fun year.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Flood comes out the same week as the new Kendrick Lamar album so I really need y’all to come through so we go #1. It’s doable I swear.
