As the sun set, The Ogden Theatre set the stage for 070 Shake‘s return to Colorado in a stripped back but positive and authentic performance. She returned less than a week before dropping her upcoming album, You Can’t Kill Me. 070 is currently taking part in a new touring trend of artists performing upcoming material to both understand the artist’s passion behind new work and the goal of getting fans tapped for her upcoming release. This mixed in with her classic and beloved songs brings a personal experience in building new memories with upcoming songs that makes you eager to go back to what you heard when it’s finally released.
The night kicked off with the lowkey vibes of Johan Lenox, a R&B artist who’s made contributions to Kanye West, Nas, and Travis Scott projects in the last decade. Alongside his backing orchestra & piano, Lenox was prioritizing low-key vibes alongside concert goer’s safety during his time. Getting to talk with him after his performance, I found his combination of hard-hitting snare drums with soothing classical arrangements to be super unique even if his auto-tuned melodies didn’t always translate well. Hopefully we’ll get to hear more of his production touch throughout ‘20’s rap sooner than later.
Once the venue was nearly packed, 070’s silhouette walked out to roaring cheers as she started with her chorus of Kanye’s “Violent Crimes.” Nothing brought more personal joy to a Kanye fan than yelling her chorus where the night only went up from there. After taking a moment of silence from the recent and tragic events in Texas, she went through waves of classic songs like “Glitter” and “Honey” and unreleased songs brought all-around eager vibes.
My personal highlight was watching her laid back personality talking about her recent sobriety, working on her recent project, and the highlight of the night being when she welcomed a bunch of fans to climb over the barricade to be hype with her and take in the moment onstage. All this closed out with 070 crowd surfing to her chorus from Kanye’s “Ghost Town” made for an overall memorable & enjoyable performance.
