Midway through the nationwide “The So Nice Tour,” Canadian pop princess Carly Rae Jepsen made an eagerly awaited stop in Denver Colorado. She brought with her the solo act, Empress Of to warm up the crowd. A solo act with nothing more than a DJ in tow, she had the energy and persona to carry herself for the half hour opening slot. Reminiscent of a young Paula Abdul, she was quickly accepted by the droves of fans already packed in to see their beloved headliner.
When Carly hit the stage you could instantly tell that the majority of people there to see her were anything but casual listeners on a random night out. Fans from the front row all the to the highest seats zealously sang along to “This Love Isn’t Crazy,” a B Side released during the Pandemic. The production matched Carly’s bubbly yet enormous energy, giving the crowd a taste of just what to expect over the next two hours. Even though she was backed by a full band, she took full advantage of every inch of the massive stage pointing and gazing to what seemed to be every person in the crowd.
With minimal time in between songs Carly belted out numbers spanning the full collection of her catalogue, seeming only pausing to hype up the fact that she is releasing a new album in the next week. About a third of the way through the set the house erupted after hearing the opening chords of the infamous “Call Me Maybe.” It was a special moment for the crowd as a whole, strangers turned to each other mimicking the chorus and embracing the sweat and smiles around the room. With her flagship song checked off so early in the set, it was a mystery what was in store for us next. I was not disappointed as we were treated to a design change, and easily a dozen more songs. The second half of the show took a more emotional turn as the songs became more heartfelt and therapeutic than the upbeat anthems that came before them. This couldn’t be more evident than with “The Loneliest Time,” the title track off of the soon to be released new album.
This all changed with the encore, which ended the show exactly as it began, a high energy spectacle that showcased the talents of everyone on stage. The finale left the majority of the crowd buzzing with excitement as everyone filtered out of the venue retelling their favorite moments. The remainder of the tour runs through the first week on November, with The Loneliest Time set to release on October 22, 2022.
