Detroit-based group Fireworks have kicked of the new year with the surprise release of their first new album in nine years, Higher Lonely Power via the band’s own Funeral Plant Collective. The sweeping new album marks a triumphant return for Fireworks, pushing the band’s trademark hooks and immediacy into bold new territory.
Stereogum published an in-depth interview with the band HERE.
Higher Lonely Power is Fireworks’ first full-length since 2014’s Oh, Common Life, and directly follows their 2019 single “Demitasse” which was the first sign of their impending new record. Guitarist Chris Mojan discussed the long road to the album saying, “We appreciate the opportunity to create together and continued to do so during our hiatus, regardless of name and outlet. Higher Lonely Power gave us the chance to be selfish and self expressive, without the pressure or expectation that comes from playing in a band. We just needed to work through some personal things first, good and bad.”
The album’s 12 songs find the group continuing their ambitious streak, delving into a broad range of sounds without sacrificing their knack for massive melodies. Vocalist David Mackinder’s soaring voice creates a striking cohesion throughout Higher Lonely Power as the band taps into biting post-hardcore, widescreen indie rock, driving guitar pop, and more. It’s a vibrant and compelling return that’s sure to please longtime fans and new listeners alike.
