Prelude Press: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for anyone who might be hearing your music for the first time?
Matilde G: I’m Matilde G, an Italian pop singer-songwriter and performer based in Singapore. I’ve always loved singing, for longer than I can remember. I was pretty good at singing but I was shy and had no stage presence. That’s when I wrote my first song around the age of 13 and decided that this was what I was going to be doing for the rest of my life. I worked extremely hard in improving my weaknesses and strengths. That brought me to where I am today, achieving my goals one by one, learning and experiencing this life as a singer more and more every day, loving it more and more every day.
You became involved with music and began releasing your own music at a young age. Looking back, how do you feel that your upbringing and the music you grew up listening to has affected what you’re doing now?
I’ve always been raised to follow my passions and pursue my goals, and do things properly, with determination and hard work. My parents always tell me that nothing comes for free and that I need to work my butt off to be able to achieve my goals. They are both very successful people, and when they put their mind to something they do it, and they do it well. They raised me to do the same, and do what makes me happy. Music is my passion, and they’ve always supported me through this journey and still do. I am so grateful for them, how they raised me, and the values they taught me. Since I’ve always been so focused on music and my goals, I never really grew up as a “Normal kid or teenager.” From age 11, I’ve taken many classes, studied for my music exams, done all sorts of gigs, and sooo much more. Unfortunately doing so sometimes means giving up on a friend’s birthday, not being able to go on that ski trip, not going out because of deadlines, and struggling to keep up with school work. It’s a lot to manage when you are young, and a lot to give up. But music is my passion and my life, so I do it gladly.
Another consequence of this lifestyle has been that I’ve had to mature faster than most. By age 14 I already had a recording agreement, a team working for me, and financial resources invested in my project. I couldn’t really afford to mess around. I was in a position where I needed to focus and get things done properly. This led me to do things very differently from my peers, even if they didn’t understand my choices. But I’m glad I’m doing what I do. I love where my project is going, and I’m glad I was raised the way I was raised, to follow my passion and work hard to pursue my goals. I wouldn’t change anything about this journey or my life.
Were there any artists or events that first inspired you to pursue a career in music?
When I was around the age of 11 I started doing singing competitions. I found this one competition called “Tour Music Fest” online and decided to sign up. I saw they had a 3-day camp and really wanted to go. The environment, the workshops, the classes, and the experience were life-changing. During that camp, I realised I needed to start writing my own songs, and I needed to improve my stage presence and technique. I realised I had the potential to make music my life, and set that goal for myself. It opened my eyes and showed me a new world. I was surrounded by people with the same passion, it was beautiful. After that, I participated for another four years in a row, and every year I came up with something new. I started as a shy girl singing covers and turned into a confident performer signing her own original work. The people I met there and the friendships I made are priceless. I will never forget how motivating, engaging and helpful every member of the staff was. To this day, I am still in contact with everyone. This experience was in large part, the beginning of my career in music, and I am so thankful for everyone that encouraged me and is still supporting me through this journey.
You’ve released a handful of singles since your first release in 2019 and are gearing up for your most exciting year yet in 2023! What are you excited for listeners, both new and old, to hear from you this year?
This year is full of surprises. I have a new style, songs, collaborations, merch and so much more. A lot of personal songs that people can relate to, and a lot more of myself and my thoughts. It’s scary to think that in my next few songs, I’ll basically be exposing everything about myself, but I’ll do it gladly if it helps others. You can also expect a lot of cool videos, and much more content (once I’m done with school in June)! 2023 is going to be my year, I can feel it!
Your new single, “Hypocrite” is a very empowering track. What inspired this one?
‘Hypocrite’ was inspired by a very trashy relationship where I wasn’t respected or treated correctly. I started wondering if I was doing something wrong. I felt bad because I didn’t know why I deserved to be treated like this by boys. That’s when it hit me. I’m not the problem, if these people aren’t happy with themselves they can’t make you happy. I realized that other people’s actions don’t define who I am, only me and my actions do. In response to that, I came out of this situation stronger than ever. I was ready to live my life to its fullest, knowing that I’m not the wrong one, but these hypocritical people that are all talk and no actions are. ‘Hypocrite’ is an anthem for people like me, who haven’t been treated correctly. It’s an encouragement to move on and to be happy knowing that we don’t need these trash people in our lives, we only need ourselves.
What would you like for fans to take away from “Hypocrite”?
We are not victims of cheaters, they are victims of themselves. Our self-worth is not defined by others people’s actions. Keep your back straight, shoulders back, and head high, and walk away from the hypocrisy of these people.
Looking back over the past few years, how do you feel you’ve grown as an artist between “Hypocrite” and your earlier work? Is there anything that you’ve learned recently that you’re applying to the new music you’re working on?
During these years I’ve grown a lot as a musician and person. I’ve lived many new experiences that have then translated into my music. I’ve clearly defined my style, and my personality as an individual and in my music. I am stronger, I am more confident, and I am ready to get vulnerable with my music. And this journey starts with ‘Hypocrite’.
“Hypocrite” is just the start of your new music this year. What are you looking forward to the most in the coming months? What can fans expect next?
I am currently working on the music video for my next release, which will probably be coming out around May and I am SOOOO EXCITED to record this one. Between that and ‘Hypocrite’ coming out my adrenaline had been through the damn roof.
Do you have any big plans for 2023?
My goal for 2023 and for every upcoming year, is to make as many people as possible feel less lonely and more understood through my music. It’s a problem I have myself, and music is always there to understand me and keep me company! I wish for everyone to see that beauty and make use of the power music has.
