50,000 fans stayed awake through September for a chance to catch Green Day’s sold out The Saviors Tour at Denver’s Colorado Rockies stadium, Coors Field, alongside support from The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid, and The Linda Lindas.
Formed in 2018, the young pop punk group The Linda Lindas, whose members are only 14-19 years old, have been winning over fans with fun songs, high energy, and gritty vocals which they showcased opening the night for early fans around 5:30 p.m. The group performed songs off their 2022 project Growing Up, as well as new songs off upcoming album No Obligation, while jumping, running, and rocking out on the stage and catwalk.
After a short intermission, Californian punk rock band Rancid took the stage just after 6 p.m. and immediately jumped into tracks spanning their entire discography, from “Maxwell Murder” to “The 11th Hour”. Fans attending the show all stood and began recording as soon as the intro for the 1995 hit “Time Bomb” began, and sang along all the way through “Rubo SoHo”, ending the set with a bang and leaving Denver fans hungry for more music.
Legendary rock band The Smashing Pumpkins entered the stadium to a roar of applause and smoke, led by frontman Billy Corgan and lead guitarist James Iha. Backed by a dazzling light show, the Pumpkins smashed hit after hit, from iconic songs “Today”, “Cherub Rock”, and “1979”. The Denver crowd sang along and readied themselves for what they had all been waiting for, Green Day.
The lights went dim, the crowd went silent, and the speakers went quiet. All of a sudden, Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody began playing, and out walked a bunny wearing a Colorado Rockies jersey, hyping the fans while they sang along. After a few more intro songs including “Blitzkrieg Bop” and “We Will rock You”, it was finally time. Walking on to the stage came the main attraction of the night, Billie. Joe. Armstrong. The crowd erupted with cheers and screams, fans eagerly waiting for the band they love to take them back to 1994. The band took their places, including original members – bassist/vocalist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool. Within seconds, Green Day began their two and a half hour set with flames and smoke, opening the show with “The American Dream Is Killing Me”. The iconic rock band ran through an impressive 37 songs, playing both Dookie and American Idiot in their entirety plus various other hits throughout the years. Many fans left the show still thinking about the performance the next day, and will be back to see Green Day next time they come to Colorado!
