With their new album Synergy coming out soon, and with the band hitting Denver in just a little over a week, we decided to have a chat with Koby Blake from Homemade Crazy about their small town beginnings, their inspirations and their advice for new musicians. You can pick up Synergy soon and check out Homemade Crazy at Herman’s Hideaway in Denver on July 30th!
How would you describe your sound for anyone who hasn’t listened to you yet?
We are a high energy indie pop electro punk band.
As a band, what are your major influences?
I can’t speak for the entire band since we all listen to different music, but my influences include Green Day, Nirvana, Incubus, Cage The Elephant, Blind Melon, punk rock music and anything that goes in one ear and out the other smoothly. I get most of my song writing ideas from day to day living. Max likes to rock, Breezy likes to dance and Aaron likes to get lost in his music.
Was there anything you really wanted to be able to accomplish with your upcoming album Synergy?
I wanted something that I could be proud of and not be afraid to release it to the whole world. I just really wanted to have a solid debut record and that’s exactly what I got and I hope you all love it as much as I do.
Were there any messages that you wanted to convey?
No messages really, I just had a lot to get off my chest in the writing process. If there was a message it would have to be: dream big, worry little and forget about all the bumps along the way, look at them as ramps!!!
Do you have a favorite song off of the album?
I love all the songs but if I had to choose one it would have to be “Older Now.” It’s just a lot of fun to play and it kinda pokes fun at me and Aaron, I think we need that sometimes.
Coming from a small town, do you think it was a little bit more difficult to break into the music scene?
Absolutely. Breaking into a local scene is hard enough but it’s much harder when you have to drive four hours in any direction to get to a music scene. I don’t know if we are there yet but we are working on it!
Is there anything specific that you guys do to try to make yourselves stand out?
Aaron wears flat billed hats, I think that really sets us apart, and I sweat more than most people. We think we are pretty original, but no we don’t really try to do anything but make good music.
What advice would you give to any new bands trying to make a name for themselves, that maybe you wish you would have received when you were first starting out?
Don’t waste time. Get serious as soon as possible! Being in a good band is fun but it’s not just partying and rocking shows. If you want it, get your butt out there and get it. I wish we would have been doing what we are doing now 5 years ago. We were really good, but just not motivated enough. We were sitting around waiting for luck but the music industry doesn’t work like that. At least not anymore.
What are your plans for the future? Hitting the road soon?
We have a string of tour dates coming up this summer and we also plan on building our merchandise catalogue soon. We will also keep building our name as much as possible!
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Stay crazy everyone cause we are coming to your town and we want to party with you!!!
