Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about Amenize for any of our listeners who may not be familiar?
Brain: Hello Guys. We’re a Brazilian Metal Band from São Paulo. We recorded our first record five years ago when the band was just a side project. Since Danilo joined the crew and our older band ‘dismantled’, we started working on our second album, ‘Black Sky’, as a full time band. The band has a lot of influences from hard rock to extreme metal, but the only thing that we think when we write the songs is to keep it heavy and keep it true.
You guys just released your new album, Black Sky. Was there anything you really wanted to be able to accomplish with this release?
Bruno: First of all , we want to be heard by as many people as possible. We want to spread our sound and our message all over the world.
Can you tell us about the story behind Black Sky? I understand that it’s a concept album.
Brain: The story of the album takes place in an alternative world where people are living in a chaos created by the force that controls everything, the ‘Black Sky’. This faceless institution has ruled the world for so long that people stopped asking why and started to slowly accept it as something ‘normal’. The main character is someone that just can’t stand no more the pathetic place where he lives, and decides to act and rise against the curtain of lies the “Black Sky” has created. In the process, he starts to enlighten people with the truth that has ever been there. Inside everyone of us.
What drew you to the idea of creating a concept album?
Brain: When we wrote the song ‘Black Sky’, the environment that the music created brought instantly in my head the idea of making a concept album with the Black Sky as a metaphor for the hypocritical-alienated society we live in.
How do you feel Black Sky compares to your previous release, When Angels Turn Into Demons?
Brain: It’s a completely different band, it’s a completely different story behind the album. We have no intention of sounding the same, because we want to be a band in constant evolution. The only thing in common between the two releases is the main intention of the band to make it sound heavy and true, always.
What changes or noticeable areas of growth can listeners expect from the new music?
Danilo: I think that Brain and Bruno have developed their musicality a lot over the past five years. ‘Black Sky’ sounds more mature, groovier, heavier, and has some deep lyric content in it. Recording with Adair Daufembach made a huge difference too.
Did you have any major influences or inspirations for Black Sky?
Brain: Musically speaking, everyone in the band has different influences. And there’s a bit of everyone of those in our songs. For the Black Sky, story the day by day struggle here in Brazil was an inspiration, it made me think about the whole dystopia story. I discovered Aldous Huxley’s incredible ‘Brave New World’, which it helped me a lot too. What he says in the book, the worst form of mass control, in my opinion, that is making people start to accept their state of being and their servitude as something completely normal was exactly what I realized about our own society.
What is the music scene like in São Paulo? Do you feel that the scene has had an impact on yourselves as artists or Amenize as a band?
Brain: The Metal scene here in Sao Paulo is growing again , but it didn’t had any impact on ourselves, yet. We really hope to be a part of the scene from now on.
Now that Black Sky is out, what is the rest of 2015 looking like for Amenize?
Danilo: Promoting Black Sky as much as possible, people deserve to listen it. Meanwhile, we are getting ready to start a Black Sky Tour on 2016.
Thanks for taking the time to talk with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
