Q&A with Mike Kruger of Charming Liars

    By Dom VigilMay 11, 2016
    Charming Liars Interview

London-based Charming Liars are in the midst of their North American tour, supporting Blaqk Audio and Night Riots, and will be hitting Denver this Saturday, May 14th. With the addition of new vocalist, Kiliyan Maguire, the band is more ready than ever to wow concert-goers with their new album, 12:31AM, out May 27th! Listen to their brand new single “Soul” below and catch the band at an upcoming show this spring.

    Interview by Dom Vigil

You guys are currently out on the road with Blaqk Audio and Night Riots – how have those shows been treating you so far?

It’s been an amazing tour so far, all the shows have been sold out and it’s great to play with such good bands and nice people every night. It’s been a while since we toured America so it feels great to get back on the road in this country again

What are you most excited about on the upcoming tour dates?

Getting to visit new cities and see friends and fans in cities we’ve already played is always the most fun but honestly we’re excited about playing the new songs live. They feel so good to play and watching the reactions of the audience is always an interesting experience

What would you like listeners to be able to take away from your live performances, if it is their first time seeing you live?

Hopefully listeners will see how much fun we have playing music together, we put all the energy we have into the show and we try and make the crowd have as much fun as possible. Plus we are really fucking loud

On top the string of tour dates, you just recently released your new single, “Soul” – can you tell us a little bit about this track?

Soul was one of those songs that came together really quickly and we pretty much new it was a special song almost instantly. I think it’s a great showcase of where we are as songwriters right now and sets up the rest of the EP nicely

You also released a really awesome music video for the track. What was the inspiration behind it?

We wanted to do something a little different and were lucky enough to meet the guys in Sharpball entertainment down in Colombia who had a great idea that suited the song. We trusted them to do something really cool and they did a great job

“Soul” is off of your upcoming album, 12:31AM. Did you have any goals or plans when working on the album?

Not really if I’m being honest. We are always writing so we just try our best to write the best songs possible and only really think about the record as a whole after we’ve finished recording everything

How do you feel you’ve grown with the writing and recording of 12:31AM?

Well we’ve been through a lot of changes recently. Our old singer quit the band which is obviously gonna change the dynamic but the addition of Kiliyan has really taken our songwriting and performance to the next level. He’s opened a lot of doors with his talent that were once closed so it feels really liberating to write, record and perform with him. That’s definitely been the biggest change on this record.

When can listeners expect to hear new music from the album?

12:31 is dropping May 27th and we couldn’t be more excited about it

Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2016?

Touring touring and more touring. We’re gonna play as much as we can and try and hit as many different countries and states as possible

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Watch out, we’re coming for you world!
