Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us about Secret Space for any readers who may not be familiar?
Secret Space started about a year and a half ago, and has gotten a very quick start. We signed with Equal Vision Records and released a self-titled EP in September, then recorded our debut LP “The Window Room” with Will Yip the very next month. TWR comes out this month and we will be on our second tour ever supporting Turnover.
You’re just getting ready to drop your debut full-length, The Window Room on June 17th. What are you most excited for listeners to hear on this release?
I honestly believe our album sounds like no other band in the scene right now, and I give the credit to Will for being such an amazing producer and friend throughout the process. There are always a couple albums each year that just feel completely fresh, a brand new spin on the same sound, and I feel that we achieved that. Very proud of each individual song, all the work we did writing and tweaking them, and the vibe of the record on the whole.
Were there any stories you wanted to tell on The Window Room or any goals that you wanted to accomplish?
The way I wrote it TWR in itself is a story to me, isolating myself from the outside world while still watching it from a distance. I literally wrote the album in the window room of my house, that has 3 walls of windows overlooking a ton of nature, trees, the stars at night. That room became a metaphor for this kind of self-rediscovery period I was going through in my life, and each song is a story to me based on real life events. The major themes throughout the record are commitment, patience and honesty. I just wanted to make a record that was an honest look at myself and how I fit into the outside world.
Earlier this year you released a split EP with The Flats. How do you feel these songs compare to the songs on that EP, or your self-titled EP from last year?
We released our first two songs ever with the Flats a year ago and a split single on Will Yip’s label Memory Music in March. The first split feels more like a demo at this point, and since The Window Room was the song on our Memory split, it’s obviously on par with the rest of the record haha
You also worked with Will Yip on this release. What do you feel he brought to the table and how do you think he affected the album?
We owe so much to Will, he really guided us to discover our identity as a band. He is the fourth member or Secret Space, and what we did together on this record is just the beginning of a lifelong musical journey together.
So far, you’ve released two singles from the new album, “Stars” and “I’ve Come Around.” What makes these songs special to you?
I love how different they are musically but still have a cohesive vibe. Personally “Stars” is the most important song I’ve ever written; we wrote and recorded it at the very end of our time in the studio, with only two days left. Such an effortless and pure experience that taught us there are no right or wrong ways to write a Secret Space song. At the time I knew I was going to ask my now wife to marry me when we got home from recording, so I wanted to try and capture that feeling in a song. “Stars” came from a very honest place and I’m glad we recorded it the way we did.
You also released a video for “Stars” – can you tell us about it? What was the filming of the video like?
Stylistically the video is our homage to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That movie is all about memories, losing some while trying to keep others. “Stars” is about how the details of our memories are replaced with feelings, and how to decipher those feelings when we move forward with our lives. We picked my favorite spots in town to film the wilderness scenes, places that have a ton of positive memories for me (including the forest featured on the album cover) and just let the scenery dictate the narrative of the video.
This summer you’re also hopping on the road with Turnover and Sports. What are you most excited for on these upcoming tour dates?
We’ve only toured once so far, so to get back on the road is exciting in itself! Turnover became our favorite band in the scene this past year, we are grateful they are bringing us out with them and excited it coincides with our album release!
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
If you haven’t check us out yet I recommend starting with the Stars video or at least listening to Stars on Spotify. If you have already checked us out, thank you for you continued support, and see you on the road soon!
