Dallas dark pop quintet Mount Tyrant‘s new music video for “One Night” is impossible not to fall in love with. Driven by the balance and contrast between dark and light, the video serves as the perfect visual for Mount Tyrant’s dreamy and sometimes spooky synth pop sound. With only one EP under their belts and the new single out now, the band are looking toward the future, hard at work on new music, and we can’t wait to hear what comes next.
Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about Mount Tyrant for any readers who may not be familiar?
Yeah! We are a 5 piece indie rock / dark pop band from Dallas, Texas. We just released a new single called ‘One Night’ and a music video to go along with it. We hope you check it out!
How do you feel being based out of Dallas and that music scene has shaped you as artists?
Dallas is great. We were all in different bands growing up here, and a lot of the friendships we have and bands we like stem from the music scene in this area.
What would you like to be able to bring to your local scene or how would you like to help it grow?
We really want our local scene to feel like a community. Until recently, there has been a weird competitive vibe in our area. Things have shifted a little bit towards something really positive though, and there’s an air of encouragement and a celebration of differences that we are super excited to be a part of and contribute towards.
You guys just recently released a music video for “One Night.” What makes this song special to you?
A lot of our previous music and visual stuff has been more on the dark side. One Night is one of our first sort of “fun” sounding releases. It’s has an energy to it that we are really proud of. It’s probably unanimously the favorite song of ours to play live.
There’s a big push and pull between light and dark in the video for “One Night” – is this something you strive to achieve within your music? How do you go about creating that sort of aesthetic and sound?
We really strive to create a contrast in our sound and image. By making things not as they seem, it almost makes you stop and think about the material more. Something that sounds really bright and colorful may carry a really dark and heavy message. It brings some depth and layers to writing pop and rock sounding stuff that isn’t always present in that kind of music.
Last year, you released your EP, Young Blood. Now that it has been out for a while, what do those songs mean to you?
Young Blood will always be super special to us. There was a lot of sacrifice and self discovery that went into that release. That was when we were still really learning about each other, and the dynamic of the band. That’s when we put the puzzle together. I think the subject matter and tone of Young Blood reflects that.
How do you feel you have grown or are growing since the release of the EP, going into your new material, like “One Night”?
One Night, as well as the upcoming EP are where we feel we really found our voice and footing as a band. Everything feels a lot more natural and cohesive. Both in our live performance and our writing process.
With “One Night” our now, can listeners expect any more new music any time soon?
Yes! We are preparing an EP for release later this year.
What would you like listeners to be able to take away from your music or live performances?
One thing that we love about being in a band and playing music for people, is it gives us the courage to present ourselves how we’ve always wanted to. Whether its what we do live, or how we dress and look as a group. We really love to dress up and have a lot of fun when we play.
Also, people have told us we have a really spooky / glam sort of vibe to our live performance. We like that.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thanks for having us! Be on the look out for new material. Maybe a few new videos as well 🙂
