Unconscious Disturbance have one hell of a year ahead of them, and with their new EP, Let It Rain out September 1st and new song “Eye To Eye” out now, they’re off to a great start. Let It Rain not only marks Danny Dahan and Tim Haggerty‘s first album with the band, but the EP has also been very carefully crafted between New York and Brazil with Brazilian Grammy-nominated engineer Luizinho Mazzei. With the bar set high on “Eye To Eye,” and plans to hit the road as soon as possible, Let It Rain promises to be one for the books.
Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about Unconscious Disturbance for any readers who may not be familiar?
Sure! The band was formed in São Paulo, Brazil by brothers Dan and Kiko Freiberg, and we are Brooklyn, NY-based now. What you hear is influenced by rock, metal, funk and Latin music. Other fun facts: we have a drummer who sings and plays songs standing up, and we have 3 singers!
You guys are getting ready to release your new EP, Let It Rain in September – what are you most excited for listeners to hear on the EP?
Wow, that’s a hard question! We’ve worked so hard on every song. I feel like the EP explores all dimensions of the band. There is some upbeat groovy stuff, some heavier stuff, and some more gloomy stuff. We are just excited for people to go on a trip when they listen to us!
Did you have any specific goals in mind when working on Let It Rain?
Absolutely. Let it Rain is very different from our previous album, and is our first release with our new lineup (Danny and Tim’s first album with U.D.) We are excited to spread the word about our new sound. The goal is to hit the pavement and build local followings. We are pumped to live in the new van we just bought for months to come, and make it happen.
What was the most rewarding part about working on Let It Rain?
The process is full of rewards. We gave ourselves the luxury of recording in New York and Brazil, in top of the line studios. We worked with Brazilian Grammy-nominated engineer Luizinho Mazzei and just had a blast recording. I think the sessions were the biggest present we gave ourselves during the process. The amazing mixes we are getting now are of course the final reward!
You just released “Eye To Eye” from the EP. Can you tell us a little bit about the song?
“Eye to Eye” was the first song we wrote with our current line up, so we felt it was a great way to start releasing our new material. We made sure to bring in our Brazilian roots and keep a sort of Samba-fusion as the main underlying groove. We were lucky to have our friend Marivaldo Dos Santos, one of the lead percussionists in NYC’s STOMP, come in to collaborate on the track. The song was inspired by one night where we were invited to this nightclub and were just really out of place, I guess. The club was filled with people who were so worried about portraying a fake image of themselves. We’d see all these people who seemed beautiful at first just turn into ugly and dull people, and it was just pretty sad. We went straight from the club to the studio and started writing the song.
What would you like listeners to be able to take away from your music or live performances?
Good energy and straight up good times for the live show. The music talks a lot about embracing individuality and being yourself, so we like to make people feel stronger and more confident in who they are!
How do you feel you’ve grown from when you first formed to now? What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned along the way?
Man, it’s hard to even start. We’ve evolved sonically and as people. We are family now. I think the biggest lesson we’ve learned is how hard you need to work to make it in this business. The grind is something we’ve learned to love and can’t live without. It’s so much better to be rewarded when you work hard.
With Let It Rain dropping in a couple of months, do you have any other big plans for 2016?
Touring, writing, touring, writing, living in a van and connecting with fans.
Thank you for taking the time to talk with us! Is there anything else you would like to add?
Thank you, first of all! Stay posted for U.D. releases from now til’ September. We will be releasing a track every 3 weeks. We are heading on a big tour in September. Stay tuned, feel free to hit us up, and keep it real!! It all starts in your head…
