Although 2016 is just starting to wind down, Colony House have one hell of a year ahead of them. On top of the release of their new album, Only The Lonely in January of 2017, the band are currently out on the road with The Mowgli’s through October, and with their wild new video for “You & I” out now, the band and their fans have plenty to be excited for. Colony House will be hitting Denver at The Bluebird Theatre on September 20th (Tickets HERE) before continuing on their month long trek to end the year. Listen to “You & I” below and catch the band live this fall!
Interview by Dom Vigil
You are getting ready to release your new album, Only The Lonely early next year. What are you most excited for listeners to hear on it?
We still believe that there is something magical about an entire album. Songs can be special by themselves but those songs become even more powerful in context. We are excited for people to sit down and hear the full Only The Lonely story… Start to finish.
What was the most memorable moment or the highlight of working on the album?
Hmmmm… There is an outro after a song called “Remembered For” and it was a super spontaneous moment. We had finished tracking the song and Will had an idea to reprise a pre chorus that happens before the second chorus. Our producer hit record and said “just start playing whatever feels right.” It was this unplanned, unwritten musical happening that ended up being one of our favorite moments on the album.
In the two year gap between When I Was Younger and Only The Lonely, how do you feel you’ve grown or evolved as musicians?
We have played over 200 shows since putting When I Was Younger out. I think that we have grown as players, performers, and as a band through that. You learn what connects with the listener and what connects you as a band when you are singing the same songs night after night. Our goal when performing is to try and tear down the invisible barrier that somehow exists between the stage and the audience. I don’t think we have mastered tearing that wall down completely yet… But i think we have taken big steps in the last two years.
What is your favorite thing about the new album?
We love that it feels real and like we set up in a room and played it as a band… Because that’s what we did.
You also just released a music video for “You & I,” which is insane! Stylistically, what was the inspiration behind the video?
Thanks! I’m not sure exactly what the inspiration was behind the video… We loved the idea of it feeling like an amateur rock documentary that may have been shot sometime in the last 3 or 4 decades. More or less we just wanted to shoot something that made us laugh while filming it and while watching it.
You’re going to be out on the road with The Mowgli’s this fall – what are you most excited about on these upcoming tour dates?
Trying out some new songs! We love touring and meeting new people too.
What would you like fans to be able to take away from your upcoming shows?
A t-shirt, a hat, maybe a CD or Vinyl as well…
Just kidding, We always want people to feel like they saw something real and honest on stage, or like they made a new friend that night.
What does the future hold for Colony House after these upcoming dates? Could we expect possibly some headlining shows later this year or early next year?
I can’t say much… but you can definitely expect to see us on the road quite a bit. We can’t wait!
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you! Excited to be in Denver soon!
