Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about NEW LANGUAGE for any readers who may not be familiar?
We’re a band out of Los Angeles, currently on tour with The Used.
How did you meet and form? What brought you together to form NEW LANGUAGE and begin creating music?
Last summer, Matt and I got together with our friend Tony (drummer of At The Drive-In, Sparta, and Gone Is Gone) to jam and write music without any expectations. We met in our rehearsal space in Los Angeles and started creating music that felt better than any other projects we we’re currently involved in so we knew we were onto something new. There was a real energy to it that was familiar yet refreshing at the same time. We quickly ended up writing 10 songs and spent the summer recording them in that same rehearsal studio.
You recently released the music video for your new single, “Wake Up.” What was the inspiration behind this song?
Wake Up was the first song we wrote together, the first song we recorded, and subsequently the first song we decided to put out as a band. With everything going on across the world, it’s frustrating how so many of us seem to be entirely preoccupied by the latest inconsequential celebrity gossip, or tabloid piece – instead of feeling and acting upon the trials we face as a worldwide society. It’s easy to pass blame or ignore the tragedies occurring all over the world, but if we all were able to break free from the quicksand of crap thrown at us every day by modern media and care a bit more, the world would be a better place.
The music video is also pretty powerful. What did you want to convey between the live action and animation?
Going along with the theme of the song… the main character in the video gets sucked up into a nightmare while watching late night tabloid TV and has to fight his way out to break through to the real world.
Since the release of “Wake Up,” you also dropped another new song, “Frantic Believer.” Can fans expect any more new music, or possibly an EP soon?
Absolutely. We’re putting out another song and video in a few weeks and plan on continuing to release music throughout the year.
On top of these new songs, you also just jumped on tour with The Used for their 15 year anniversary tour. How have these shows been so far?
It’s been an incredible experience. Not only are their fans receptive to what we’re offering, but The Used and everyone on their team has been very kind.
What are you most excited about on your upcoming tour dates?
Each night performing on this tour is it’s own thrill. We’re up there improvising and feeding off the energy of the crowd so each show feels different. Having the opportunity to play for, and connect with 1500 people through music every night remains just as exciting as the first night of tour.
After things wrap up later this year, do you have any other big plans for the end of 2016 or beginning of 2017?
Plans are brewing… nothing we can announce at the moment but we don’t plan on slowing down.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
No problem. Thank you for having me.
