Q&A with Charlie Bender of The Attack

    By Shannon ShumakerNovember 22, 2016
    The Attack Interview

2016 has been one hell of a year for Orlando-based punk band, The Attack. The group recently released their new album, On Condition earlier this month and just wrapped up a string of tour dates with Less Than Jake, ending the year on a high note. And although the band may be taking it easy for the remainder of the year, 2017 already looks bright for them – on top of their goals to do some international touring, the band is hopping on Flogging Molly’s Salty Dog Cruise to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in style. Read our interview with the band below and pick up On Condition now!

Can you tell us a little bit about The Attack for any readers who may not be familiar?

The Attack is a punk band from Orlando, Florida

What first drew you to the punk and hardcore music scene?

I’ve been playing music since grade school.  My evolution of music involved jamming with friends at a young age.  Mix that with skateboarding and friends with older brothers and you get a kid being introduced to bands like Bosstones and Jane’s Addiction at 12 years old.  The seal was broken after that for me.  The DIY ethics of punk and hardcore definitely intrigued me so I gravitated towards it.

How do you feel the local Orlando scene has shaped you as artists?

Orlando has been home for 3/4 of the band for 30+ years.  Brad’s from Jersey but has been here long enough to claim a second home.  Sticking with a scene for 25+ years, no matter where you live, will shape you.  Growing with other musicians, bar owners, fans, it naturally becomes a tight knit of friends, it’s like family.  I’m thankful to have been a part of this scene for so many years.

You just recently released your new album, On Condition earlier this month! What do those songs mean to you?

Overall I feel that we have written a record that can relate to many different types of people.  Old punks, young punks.  Fans that are hardcore and in the scene 100%.  Also to friends that might not be in the mix as much as they use to.  Life happens, people grow in and out of things.

Did you have any major goals or messages in mind when you were working on the album?

The major goal was to get these songs recorded and out to our fans. The message is always the same.  Stay positive and sing the truth!!!

What would you like listeners to be able to take away from On Condition?

I want this record to be a soundtrack of events to come.  To be a part of the playlist of experiences. For people to remember where they were when they first heard the guitar intro of “Call to Arms.”

You’re currently wrapping up some tour dates with Less Than Jake, as well! How have those shows been so far?

It’s always a great time hanging with LTJ.  We’ve know those guys for a while now.   Gets better every time!!

What has been the highlight of your year so far?

The highlight was getting this new record “On Condition” released for people to check out. Reconnecting with our friends Bigwig was quite a highlight as well.

Do you have any goals or plans for 2017 yet?

    Goals – international touring

Plans – we are a part of the Flogging Molly “Salty Dog Cruise”

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Thanks for checking us out.  Hope to see everyone at the shows.  Check out TheAttack.us for dates
