Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about Loose Buttons for any readers who might not be familiar?
We are 4 nice boys who all live along the East River and play good old-fashioned New York City Rock N’ Roll.
You guys are just getting ready to release your new EP, Sundays in February. Did you have any major goals in mind when you were working on these songs?
I think the biggest goal was to try to stay as honest as we could, both lyrically and musically. We’re pretty raucous live, so we wanted that energy to translate into a studio recording. Lyrically that mindset followed.
You’ve mentioned that Sundays can serve as a guide to a relationship comedown, and so far, both songs you’ve released from the EP have been really powerful breakup songs. I hate to ask, but where did the inspiration for these songs come from?
Prior to the EP, I went through a breakup that definitely shook my core a bit. I spent a lot of time dissecting the relationship and trying to grow from it. These songs were my medicine and I guess my way to get through it.
Was it a conscious effort to create an EP centered around breakups and the lows of relationships, or something that sort of just happened?
I wouldn’t say it was a conscious effort, but at the same I couldn’t lie to myself. Every time I’d go to write lyrics I’d start rambling about my feelings, so it was pretty inevitable it was going to translate to these songs.
You most recently released “Am I The Only Reason?” from the EP. Can you tell us a little bit about this track in particular?
It was a track that Zack brought to the table and it resonated with us instantly. Lyrically it was the first time I looked at myself and took some of the onus for the break-up.
Obviously, songs like the ones on Sundays are very relatable to a lot of people. If listeners take away anything from the EP, what would you want it to be?
It’s pretty simple, but we just hope that people feel something when they listen to our songs.
After Sundays drops, could we expect to catch you out on the road?
Before we hit the road, we’re doing a hometown residency at Pianos on the Lower East Side. 8pm every Wednesday, we guarantee it’ll be a great time.
Do you have any other big plans for 2017?
The plan is to keep on doing our thing, playing shows and start working on our debut album.
