Sweden’s Exon Banks are flipping the script with their own rendition of 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop,” but that’s not the only unconventional thing about this duo. Although they were from the same town, they didn’t come together and begin creating music until they connected in a club in Berlin. With their innovative new cover out now and an EP coming this spring, 2017 promises to be a great year for Exon Banks – who knows what could happen next!
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about Exon Banks for anyone who might not be familiar?
We are two Swedes making electronic pop.
How did you first come together and begin collaborating with one another?
We are from the same town, but it was not until our common friends decided to do a roadtripp to Berlin together we found each other in the dusty morning at a tecnoclub. We were talking about life, music n future dreams. Back in Sweden we started to produce music together and EXON BANKS was a fact.
You recently released a unique cover of 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop.” What inspired you to create your own spin of the track?
Exon always sings on this song at the late after-hours, or just when she’s in a good mood. So one day while we were cooking, drinking wine, singing, making music… Exon sang candy shop while Banks made this smokey downtempo beat and there it was.
What would you like someone to take away from your version of the song that they might not get from the original track?
We are all just human beings, and in a perfect world we should all be proud and comfortable with ourselves regardless our gender, sexuality, body, age or origin. Most people like to have sex because it’s a natural part of being a human, but very often it feels like society or whatever it is makes us think about sex in quite stereotyped ways. Thats quite boring.
Are there any cover songs that you looked to for inspiration when working on the song? Or any covers that really stand out to you as some of your favorites?
We don’t usually do covers, this one more just happened.. Some of our favorites would be Yaeji- Guap, José González – Heartbeats and Erykah Badu – Cel U Lar Device.
Could fans expect to hear any more new music any time soon?
YES we have an EP coming up this spring, ”Seduce My Mind and You Can Have My Body.”
With new year ahead of you, do you have any big plans for 2017?
We love sitting in the studio, getting nerdy with our synths and pads. So, we just want loads of time to do that without having to eat noodle everyday =) and off course more live shows would be awesome.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you for liking our new single 🙂
