Born in the summer of 2015, Silver Rose is the shimmering shoegaze dream pop project from acclaimed singer/songwriter Carla Sariñana. The project was initially created to address the singer’s love for the genre of music and quickly turned into honest, heartfelt songs of love, dreams, perseverance and hope. With her self-titled debut EP out now and a few shows planned throughout spring and summer, 2017 promises to be a great year for Silver Rose. Read what she had to say about the project, her debut EP and plans for the rest of the year below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about Silver Rose for anyone who might not be familiar?
Silver Rose is a shoegaze/dream pop musical project mainly influenced by shoegaze dream pop bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Black Ryder, Mazzy Star and Tamaryn. Its a project where I pour my heart and soul out in songs.
This project is a fairly new one for you. What made you want to create Silver Rose after being involved in other musical endeavors?
I had been listening to psychedelic and shoegaze music for a while and really identified with the genre. Something in me wanted to start to play that type of music and wanted to be able to finish my own ideas. I started by learning how to sing and play the guitar, being a bass player can sometimes be very limiting if you don´t know the basics to singing and guitar. After that, I wanted to see if I had any good ideas obviously. So, after playing over and over some melodies, I finished my first song and wanted to compose more. The more I did it, the more I liked what I was doing. I never really thought I would release my songs, but something has always motivated me to keep moving and composing.
Are there any lessons you’ve learned while playing in other projects that you’ve taken over to Silver Roses?
Yes, plenty! Just learning how to make a band work, what and when to put out and the whole working as a band has been very important. I also majored in Music Business so I know a lot about the whole music industry.
Last year, you released your self-titled debut EP. Did you have any goals in mind for the songs on it?
I only want people to fall in love with the songs and understand where it comes from. To be able to connect with anyone through music is my main goal.
Were there any challenges you faced while working on the EP?
Yes of course. Being a solo project I always had to face my worst enemy, myself. At the end of the day all the decisions made were my own and if you make a mistake you live with it, and obviously learn from it as well. It was mainly producing my songs that I had trouble with, I had help from many close friends, I don’t think I could’ve done it without them. Right now I’ve been having troubles with having a solid live band, my bandmates have other bands as well so if they have a bigger show (which they generally do) they can’t make the Silver Rose show so almost everybody in the music scene in Mexico knows my songs (haha).
Also, I promote myself over here, so its tough when you do all the job by yourself, but at the same time, very rewarding.
What were some of the highlights or best moments while working on it?
When I heard the songs and knew I had something special. Once I uploaded a few demos on Soundcloud, I got so many text messages and emails from people who wanted to listen to more songs. Especially from people I respected musically, that’s what made me finish my EP.
What would you like listeners to be able to take away from the EP?
I would love for them to connect with the songs and want to listen to more.
Looking toward the future, do you have any big plans for 2017? Could fans expect to catch you on the road soon?
Yes! I have a few shows coming up over here and hope to close the year with some new material to be able to move in 2018.
