Hostile Array just recently dropped their debut single, “Devoid” and are currently gearing up to release their first album, but they’re no strangers to the music industry and the hard work that goes along with being in a band. Formerly known as My Ransomed Soul, the group has been playing music together for a few years (and for brothers Brendan and Garrison Frey, it has been even longer) and recently underwent a sonic shift, resulting in a complete overhaul and name change. Introducing, Hostile Array, a group of musicians with a goal to encourage others to look at things from a new perspective while delivering a diverse and unique blend of sounds.
Following “Devoid,” which focuses on civilian casualties in the Middle East, Hostile Array have plans continue the dialogue on their debut album, out soon. Learn more about the band and their message below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
Hostile Array has quite a bit of a background, as you guys have been playing together for a while now, just under a different name. Taking it back to the beginning, when did you first come together to start playing together and how did you know that it was a combination that worked?
My brother Garrison and I started playing music together in 2007 when I was about 13. We both had a passion for music, and so it just kind of happened naturally. We’ve played with several friends over the years, but we were the constants that stuck with it. In 2015, we seemed to finally have a solid line up with our previous project, so we decided that the 5 of us would continue making music together in Hostile Array.
Prior to the name change, Hostile Array was known as My Ransomed Soul. What was behind the decision to change your name and sound?
After 10 years, we were ready for something new. Our desires have changed a lot since we first started playing music, so it just felt right.
Sound wise, what are you most excited to explore as Hostile Array that you maybe haven’t had the chance to do in the past?
For me personally, I’ve gotten to explore a whole new range vocally. I think that has been pretty exciting. A lot of what is featured in our new material is uncharted territory for me, so its kind of refreshing in that sense.
What can fans expect from this “new” project?
I think a lot of diversity from song to song. All of the material we have written so far has been heavily influenced by early 2000s post-hardcore and metalcore, but each song has its own unique twist.
You recently released “Devoid,” your debut single as Hostile Array. What inspired the song?
“Devoid” focuses on the civilian casualties caused by years of conflict in the Middle East. It specifically references US foreign intervention policies and what I see as the hypocrisy from those that often support these policies. Many in our culture have dehumanized those who reside in these areas, and seem disregard the value of these lives, thinking of them as nothing more than “collateral damage”.
I know you’re also working on an upcoming album which touches on some really important topics. What did you want to accomplish with these songs?
I want to really provoke thought and encourage others to see a new perspective. I think when it comes to politics, too many people see it as right-wing verses left-wing. I personally see it as you’re either authoritarian, or anti-authortarian. I reject authoritarian rule, whether its from the left or the right.
Are there any songs on the album that you’re particularly excited for fans to hear? Any themes or subjects that you really felt that you needed to cover?
“Herd Instinct” and “Warmonger” are two of my favorites. They touch on topics such as nationalism and illegitimate wars respectively, which I feel are extremely relevant in todays political climate.
