Sun-drenched LA duo, Coast Modern have had one hell of a year. After kicking things off with their stint on the Advanced Placement tour in the spring, they dropped their highly anticipated self-titled debut album and now, they’ve hit the road for a run of fall tour dates to bring 2017 to an exciting close. With a headlining show at Globe Hall in Denver this month, we sat down to chat with the duo about their busy year, the new album and plans for the rest of the year, including working on their next release.

You guys have been going non-stop this year with your run on the Advanced Placement tour in the spring, your new album out last month and now headlining tour dates planned throughout October. What have been some of the highlights of your year so far?
Playing a hometown show on the Santa Monica Pier with the ocean crashing and sun setting over a huge bunch of good people was a magical moment. Also dropping the album (finally) and getting some dank road ramen makes the list.
I want to start by talking about your self-titled album because it’s also your debut full-length release. Did you have any big goals in mind when you first started working on it?
It was assembled like a big Lego set where we lost the instructions. Basically we just built it cool moment by cool moment until it looked like a intergalactic space cruiser or something.
How do you feel you’ve grown as musicians with the writing of the album?
The album is in a way a record of our growth as artists because when we started we weren’t really even a band. Some of the very first songs we wrote together are on the album, so you can find a thread of us becoming more confident with letting the freak flag fly.
Did you encounter any major challenges when working on it? If so, how did you overcome them?
The days when you show up to write and everything is sounding like garbage and you wonder if you’ve used up all your creative juice are tough. But we’ve found you gotta find a different mental perspective or just let yourself play and be weird to get it flowing again.
Looking toward the future, you’re kicking off your upcoming tour early in September and will be out on the road until mid October. What are you looking forward to the most on these upcoming dates?
Now that the album is out, we’re hoping to see a lot more singing along to songs and more wilding out at the shows. Pumped to see all of the country as Summer eases into Fall. Sampling the local delicacies and java is the icing on our tour cake.
What can fans expect from these upcoming live performances?
The goal, like when we make music, is to surprise ourselves and keep it exciting at all times, and that means keeping it spontaneous. Will we watch Homeward Bound and then have a critical discussion with the fans onstage? Probably not, but we could.
This tour also takes you through Denver for the second time this year in September. Is there anything that you’re excited to see or do while you’re in town once more?
Denver is such a rad town. Coleman has family there and spent some time there before Coast Modern burst into existence. Frost was even written in Denver. But we’re stoked to see the Demon Horse, get some good espresso, and inhale some Mile High air.
After this upcoming run of shows, do you have any other big plans for the rest of the year? Maybe some much needed relaxation, or more work?
Album 2! Would def love a trip to a beachside shack somewhere in there. More videos too!
