Nashville singer-songwriter Megan Davies is well known among the YouTube community and her one million subscribers for her creative covers, but with her debut EP, Bad Poetry, she has proven that she’s capable of creating strong original content as well. The five refreshing and whimsical songs on Bad Poetry are a direct reflection of Davies as she bares her soul using creative arrangements and sincere lyrics. The relatable songs perfectly depict the complicated entry into adulthood by delving into self-exploration, acceptance, confidence, and love.
With Bad Poetry out now, Davies will be hitting the road with Boyce Avenue across North America, playing to some of her biggest audiences yet. Get to know more about her and the new EP below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for any readers who might not be familiar?
I’m a singer/songwriter originally from Harrisburg, PA and currently living in Nashville, TN. I got my start on YouTube doing cover videos with my friends and my little sister.
What first inspired you to get involved in music and begin to seriously pursue it?
I became obsessed with the guitar when I was 12. I actually wanted to be a guitar player for a long time. It wasn’t until I moved to Nashville for college that I was introduced to songwriting and started singing more. But music has always just felt like the right path for me.
You’ve been releasing cover videos and mashups for quite a while now, which is a really cool route that a lot of musicians seem to take nowadays. What drew you to this side of the music scene?
It was almost an accident! I made my first cover video with my little sister for her birthday. All she wanted was to fly to Nashville and make a recording with me. I was a broke college student at the time and it sounded easy enough, so we did it and she convinced me to post it to YouTube. And the rest is history!
Are there any songs that you’re currently dying to cover?
I always have a few ideas rolling around in my head. One I made earlier this year – “Wanna Dance with Somebody” originally by Whitney Houston – was a track I had imagined doing for a long time. I’d also love to do a Radiohead or Bon Iver cover in the future.
You recently released Bad Poetry, your first EP of original music. What goals did you have in mind when working on these songs?
Because it’s my first original project, the main goal was to complete it! I tend to be a perfectionist, and I toured and performed with these songs for a long time before I ever recorded them. It was a huge step for me (and a bit scary) to finish them and put them out into the world.
Were there any challenges that you faced when working on the EP? What was the most rewarding aspect?
The biggest challenge was figuring out the full production sound. Everything was written on acoustic guitar, so it could have been interpreted so many different ways. It was challenging, but also very exciting to work collaboratively with drummers, bass players, etc.
What’s more nerve-wracking, covering songs that thousands of people have already heard or bearing your soul on your own original music?
100% original music. Especially when the music is about your own life. All the feedback – both positive and negative – feels very real. It’s harder to separate yourself from it.
What would you like listeners to take away from Bad Poetry?
I hope people can relate it to their own lives. My favorite types of albums are the ones I can put on and imagine the words are mine.
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2017?
Really excited to be hitting the road with Boyce Avenue this fall. We’re playing all over the US and Canada and it’ll be the biggest audiences I’ve ever performed in front of!
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Make sure you check out the EP and the acoustic videos on YouTube (that’s where all the songs started). And thanks to everyone listening!
