North Carolina pop-punk band Summer Wars are proof that hard work pays off. Since 2015, the band has released their debut EP, Better Days, a follow-up acoustic EP and a split, all on top of tour dates with As It Is, and they’re not showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon. With their recent signing to the new Adventure Cat Records and plans to release another new EP before the end of the year, Summer Wars are gearing up for their biggest year and best music yet.
In the band’s own words, their upcoming EP (release date TBA) features some of their most dynamic work to date. In order to hold fans over until then, the band has released the music video for their new single “End of an Era,” which can be heard below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us about Summer Wars for any readers who might not be familiar?
We are a four piece pop punk band from Raleigh, NC. We released our debut EP ‘Better Days’ back in late 2015, since then we have played a ton of shows, released an acoustic EP, a split, and now we are gearing up to out some new brand new songs.
You guys have been hard at work following the release of your Better Days EP with the release of an acoustic EP last year and even some tour dates with As It Is. What have been some of the highlights of the last year for you?
Like you mentioned touring with As It Is was a huge highlight, those were some of the biggest shows we have played so far as a band and all the bands were awesome so we were super grateful for that opportunity. Releasing the music video for our song “End of an Era” was a really great moment as well, it was awesome seeing everything we have worked on come together visually.
Looking toward the future, what would you like to accomplish before the end of 2017 or going into the new year?
For the rest of the year we are just focusing on getting our next EP out and playing as many shows around NC as we can. Then get back out on the road and tour as much as possible.
You recently announced your signing with the new Adventure Cat Records. What made this a perfect fit for Summer Wars?
I had been talking with the founder of the label Mike Kaminsky for the better part of a year and it seemed like we both really wanted to work together in some capacity I just didn’t really know what that would be. One day we were talking on the phone and he mentioned that he was thinking about starting a brand new label and both Mike and Amanda at the label had been so helpful up until that point, guiding us in the right direction behind the scenes, that I knew it would be the right fit.
Along with the announcement, you mentioned that you also released the music video for your new single, “End of an Era.” What does this track signify for you?
“End of an Era” is a song about coming to terms with a failing relationship, it’s about when you can tell things are about to end but you hold on anyways even if it’s toxic.
You’ve been teasing an album announcement soon as well! What can you tell us about this upcoming collection of songs?
Yes we are releasing another EP, I can tell you it will be six songs, and we hope to have it out by the end of the year. But no solid release date as of yet. I really do think they are our best songs yet. They are much more varied this time around, we have the softest song we have ever made and the heaviest song we’ve done on the new EP.
What goals have you had in mind while working on new music?
I really just wanted to continue on the path we started with the Better Days EP and make a collection of really strong songs that people can connect too.
Can fans expect to hear any more new music before the end of 2017?
Yes the plan is to have the whole EP out by the end of 2017.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
No problem, thank you so much for having us. I would just like to thank everyone who’s given Summer Wars a chance or told someone else to check us out. We just can’t wait to get these new songs out and see how people react.
