Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for any readers who might not be familiar?
I grew up in Ft Worth, TX and went to Duke in North Carolina where I started playing music. I moved to Brooklyn with the band after college, then out of the country for awhile to record and play down in Mexico and Brazil. I currently live in Austin, TX and enjoy playing soccer, painting, and fly fishing outside of music.
You’ve had quite a bit of experience writing, touring and traveling with your other project, Oh Whitney. How do you feel that has affected the music you’re writing now?
I think it helped expose us to different rhythms and sounds that we wouldn’t have encountered otherwise living in the states. It was an unconventional route for a band that started in NYC, but I think being removed from the music scene in the states allowed for a certain amount of creativity and freedom to experiment in other styles with different audiences.
You’ve also relocated to a few very different cities, from Brooklyn to San Miguel to Austin. Do you think your frame of mind and the way you write evolves with each city you’re in?
Yeah I definitely think so when I look back and listen to different songs written in different settings.
You recently released your single, “In The Basement,” which was written while you were in Mexico but recorded in multiple different locations. Do you feel that this physical journey affected the song at all?
That song went through a couple phases and arrangements. The original recording from Ft Worth had a different drum and bass groove before we re-recorded those parts down in Mexico after playing the song live for a while. The different locations were inspiring but I don’t think the physical journey affected the song at all.
What first inspired the “In The Basement”?
It was inspired by a jarring experience I had while living in Texas where I grew up. I suppose it’s a venting of sorts about the paradox of fundamentalist beliefs.
Since then, you’ve also released your song, “Caddis Moon.” Can you tell us a little bit about this track?
“Caddis Moon” is probably one of my favorite songs from the album. I like that it highlights our lead guitarist Jose’s flamenco playing. Jose grew up in Spain studying and playing flamenco guitar, so I wanted to write a song to feature his nylon playing with a bit of a latin feel. Our producer Donald added the piano solo and some vocal harmonies, and then Rob Moose added a string arrangement that really brought it all together.
With these two new singles out, do you have any plans to release an EP or album anytime soon?
Yeah we’re looking forward to releasing the full album after another single or two. We also have an additional album’s worth of material that we’ve recorded and will be releasing to follow this record.
When can fans expect to hear some more new music?
More to come over the next few months.
Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2017 or beginning of 2018?
Some holiday shows and then touring in the new year.
