If you aren’t constantly reinventing yourself, are you really even an artist? New York deathcore quartet A Wake In Providence easily answer that question on their new EP, Insidious: Phase II, which was surprise released last month on Outerloop Records. Consisting re-recorded versions of the six original songs from their 2015 Insidious EP, as well as two newer tracks, “Psycho” and “Ov Hell,” Insidious: Phase II marks a new chapter for A Wake In Providence with vocalist Will Ramos.
Although “Psycho” and “Ov Hell” aren’t necessarily “new” tracks – they were both written early on in the band’s career – they showcase A Wake In Providence’s willingness to try new things and step out of their comfort zone, even if it means stepping back in time. With 2017 coming to an end following the release of Insidious: Phase II, anything is possible in the new year for the band. Read more about the EP and their plans for the future below!
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about A Wake In Providence for any readers who might not be familiar?
Of course! We’re a four piece metal band from NYC, for fans of Whitechapel, Suicide Silence, and Behemoth just to give a base idea.
Last month, you surprise released your new EP, Insidious: Phase II. What was behind the decision to keep the EP a secret until its release?
The idea was kept quiet as a whole, we didn’t really want the word to get out at all, more of a fun little idea we had. We didn’t think we’d actually make it but our label, Outerloop Records and our manager, Mike Mowery were so on board with the idea we knew we had to do it. We figured let’s keep up with the secret vibe the idea had and translate that to the actual release as well.
The EP features new versions of the songs from your Insidious EP as well as two new tracks. What do you feel these new songs bring to the original collection of songs?
“Psycho” isn’t new at all lol the song pre dates the original EP by almost two years. We felt the best way to end the Insidious era was to add the song that started it all, it was originally intended to be there but because of time, it unfortunately never made it. “Ov Hell” is actually a B-dude from when I was writing the original version of Insidious that got lost in email conversations and sadly didn’t see the light of day until I was going through my old email just nostalgically listening to old songs I wrote that no one has ever heard. We felt adding these two songs really rounded out the EP, what came before, being “Psycho,” what could have been, being “Ov Hell,” and what it was being the original songs.
What inspired you to revisit the songs from Insidious?
The fans really took to our new vocalist Will Ramos so much so they requested we redo our debut EP with him doing vox. We approached our team with the idea and they said “He’ll yeah let’s do it!” And here we are.
How do you feel you’ve grown as musicians in the two years between Insidious and Phase II?
Short answer? Immensely. With the new additions of our vocalist Will Ramos killing it since last years single “The Imperfect: Iconoclast” as well as our drummer Anthony Adipietro who ripped live drums both on our single “A Darkened Gospel” that came early 2017 as well as on “Insidious: Phase II” I couldn’t be happier with the set of musicians I’m currently working with.
What would you like listeners to take away from the EP?
There are two versions of the EP and there will always be two versions of the EP. Some people don’t like the new version and some people don’t like the old. I made sure we left both so people would have a choice and continue to appreciate whichever they prefer.
With Insidious: Phase II out now, do you have any plans to hit the road soon? What’s next for A Wake In Providence?
Even though we have a recent release, we’re currently working and planning a lot of things for both Insidious and future works, so keep a look out for us on the road for sure.
Do you have any big plans or goals for the rest of 2017 beginning of 2018?
The rest of 2017 is looking like it’s all planning for 2018
