Just last month, cinematic singer songwriter, Evan Klar released his debut album, Deepest Creatures, and he’s already working on the next step, with a handful of tour dates planned throughout the rest of the year and beginning of 2018.
Klar fell into songwriting years before crafting his own solo release, instead touring with a close friend and working as a session musician in the U.K., but during this time, he was able to learn a bit more – both about music and himself – before diving into Deepest Creatures. The result is an exploration of sound that finds Klar pushing himself to create ten dynamic tracks and the perfect introduction for listeners. With this as the pushing off point, 2018 promises to be a great year for this new artist.
Interview by Dom Vigil
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for any readers who might not be familiar?
Hey Prelude Press, Thanks for having me. My names Evan Klar and I live in Melbourne, Australia. I started making music about five or so years ago after spending three years playing as a session musician in the U.K. Aside from making music I spend a lot of my time enjoying the outdoors, climbing and surfing. I’m an awful reader, I don’t have a degree and I’ve only worked a nine to five job once. My life generally feels a little random but making music continues to set me straight.
What first inspired you to get involved with music?
My mums a music teacher and my dad was a CD collector, so music has always had a strong presence. The double bass was my first instrument followed by the guitar, a little piano and plenty of terrible singing. I never thought I’d pursue music as a career or anything. I fell into it after a close friend of mine signed a record deal in the U.K. and asked me to go on tour, I became his minion basically, which was pretty awesome. I was a confused eighteen year and I didn’t really have any idea what I was doing so I just went with it and one thing lead to another.
Do you feel that those experiences helped you hone in on exactly what you wanted to create once you had the chance to step away from that a little bit and focus on your own music?
Exactly the opposite I think? When I started making music I felt lost and naive, I had no idea what I was doing. I still feel like I’m discovering my sound and I get the feeling I always will be. If anything it feels like I am changing my approach at a faster pace than when I started. I think it helps me to feel a little lost or out of out of control when I’m writing. I fear that if I become locked in and consistent then things will start to get boring quickly.
You recently released your new album, Deepest Creatures. You’ve mentioned before that the songs on the album play like a story with a beginning, middle and end. What stories did you want to tell with the album?
Maybe the word story is a stretch but there are scenes that hint at a reoccurring narrative. My album is about growing up and in that, I reference my own memories of naive imagination and adventure. It hope its fairly clear that nature plays a strong role in the writing. Being out in the wild filled my thoughts as a kid, I wanted to use that as much as possible, not only with lyrics but with the sound too.
Did you have any major goals in mind when working on these songs?
Honestly the biggest goal is to finish a song. Finishing a song can feel near impossible. To me, some of the songs on the album still aren’t completely finished.
What was the most challenging part about working on the album?
It feels a bit strange calling time a challenge, but any sort of ‘in-between’ wait felt like a struggle in the wrong direction. The weeks between recording sessions, the big dark blanks where the writing’s on lock down for whatever personal reason.
With Deepest Creatures out now and the new year quickly approaching, what is the future looking like? Do you have any big plans in the works?
I’m going to play this album live till I go insane, then make more albums and do it all again several times over.
Thank you for taking the time to chat with us! Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Its been a pleasure, thanks again for having me guys!
