The great thing about being involved with music is that it constantly pushes and challenges you to be better and step outside of your comfort zone, and that’s exactly what The Brinks have been able to accomplish with their newest release, EP2. Arriving two years after the release of their debut EP, Temporary Love, EP2 served as the perfect closer for 2017 and found the duo, comprised of producer Matt Friedman and Australian singer Scott Mellis, exploring their sound more than ever before.
With EP2 out now, there are endless possibilities in 2018 for The Brinks. For starters, fans can expect to see more music videos and live shows from the band. Read more about The Brinks and EP2 below.
Interview by Dom Vigil
The Prelude Press: Can you tell us a little bit about The Brinks for any readers who might not be familiar?
Scott Mellis: 2 guys, 1 part Australian, 1 part New York City.
You guys released your debut EP, Temporary Love back in 2015 and just dropped your new EP back in December. How do you feel you’ve grown between those two releases?
Scott: I think this new EP shows more scope to what we do thematically and sonically, I think we have grown as far as confidence in our own ability.
Matt Friedman: Yeah, understanding better what we want our collaboration to really sound like.
With two years between Temporary Love and EP2, I’m sure you had plenty of time to write and perfect the sound you wanted to accomplish moving forward. What goals did you have in mind for the second EP?
Scott: We wanted more live instrumentation and to further push some of our unique sounds which are samples that no one else can recreate.
Matt: I feel like we also experimented a lot with going more synthy and less live instruments on this one, knowing that we’d convert it back to a live show afterwards.
Now that it has been out for a couple of months, what are some of your favorite things about the new EP?
Matt: I love the details. Listening back I forget some of the stuff we put in so it still surprises me when I listen. Like on “Never Get High Enough When You Buy The Drugs.” There’s so much I love going on in the lyrics and sound design.
Were there any challenges you came across when working on those songs? If so, how did you overcome them?
Scott: I think just he usual things like finding the right lyric or sound or progression but nothing that stands out.
Matt: Yeah I think hitting writers block at times, having a hard time finishing. But we’d bounce around to different ideas. So many songs we didn’t end up using.
What would you like listeners to take away from EP2
Scott: Hopefully a lot of different emotions as I think it’s a broad palette of musical ideas ranging from joy to despair.
Matt: I hope that some of the songs would hit them in a way that they’d want to go back and listen to the EP again.
Before the end of 2017, you released a simplistic but really stunning video for “Comatose.” What inspired the song and video?
Scott: Thanks, that was actually a live video of the band and the main goal behind that was to show the world that we are a real band of musicians and not just 2 guys that live in the internet.
With EP2 out now and the rest of the new year ahead of you, what’s next for The Brinks? Do you have any big plans for this year?
Scott: Waiting by the phone for Oprah to call.
Matt: More videos coming soon!
